SINGAPORE \u2013 The Singapore Fitness Alliance (SFA) is helping\u00a0affected employees and freelancers of True Group find new employment.<\/p>\n

In a statement on Sept 13, SFA\u2019s president and co-founder Sean Tan said the organisation is spearheading the initiative in collaboration with the National Instructors & Coaches Association (NICA) \u2013 an association set up by the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) \u2013 and e2i \u2013 NTUC\u2019s employment and employability institute.<\/p>\n

SFA, a non-profit industry association, will however not be involved in efforts to recover unpaid salaries or commissions, Tan said.<\/p>\n

On Sept 11, fitness chains True Fitness and True Yoga ceased operations<\/span><\/a>, with their Hong Kong parent company Kontafarma declaring that it is winding up the businesses owing to market competition and cost pressures.<\/p>\n

True Fitness and True Yoga come under True Singapore Group, which also operates fitness and yoga centres TFX and Yoga Edition here.<\/p>\n

Together, the brands operated seven outlets in Singapore.<\/p>\n

The Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) said that as at 6pm on Sept 11, it had received 241 complaints from consumers affected, with reported losses of more than $609,000 in unutilised memberships, packages and services.<\/p>\n

Employees who spoke to The Straits Times said they were notified of the sudden closure via e-mail, seen by ST, at about 10.30pm on Sept 10, just an hour before the official shutdown.<\/p>\n

In the e-mail, the company\u2019s human resources department stated that \u201call outlets will be closed effective immediately and are not to be opened tomorrow (Sept 11)\u201d.<\/p>\n

The news came as a shock to the Singapore staff.<\/p>\n

One employee, Mani Jr, a 28-year-old personal trainer, told ST: \u201cManagement had even talked about upgrading some of the existing branches.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was one of around 50 former employees of True Fitness and True Yoga at a liquidators\u2019 meeting in Claymore Hill on Sept 11, where he said they were simply asked to sign termination forms.<\/p>\n

Calvin Siew, a 43-year-old exercise instructor, told ST that the company said staff would \u201cneed to wait\u201d for updates on the remainder of their September pay.<\/p>\n

Mani Jr added that some of his fellow instructors are foreigners who may have to leave Singapore within seven to 30 days.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a hard goodbye between us colleagues. It feels like the final time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
