Filmmaker Lav Diaz takes audiences into the jungles of the Philippines with Let Us Through, Dear Ancestors<\/em>, a harrowing historical drama premiering out of competition at this year\u2019s Venice International Film Festival<\/span>.<\/div>\n

The premise here loosely evokes Henri-Georges Clouzot\u2019s The Wages of Fear<\/em> (1953), replacing the volatile nitroglycerine of that film with massive blocks of limestone.<\/p>\n

Set in the early 17th century, approximately a century after the events of Diaz\u2019s 2025 film Magellan<\/em><\/span> \u2013 which explored the Portuguese and Spanish colonial campaigns across Southeast Asia \u2013 the new feature continues the Filipino director\u2019s fascination with the subject.<\/div>\n

The year is 1617, a period when churches were being erected across the Philippines, claiming countless indigenous lives as a result. For the past 15 years, a small place of worship has been under construction deep within the jungle.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is the church that will build this island,\u201d remarks Padre Enciso (Bart Guingona), a brutish Spanish friar dubbed a \u201ccurse\u201d for his deviancy, sexually exploiting local widows at every opportunity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
