Lee Seow Ser was on a sabbatical from her legal career in 2014 when she fell ill and needed surgery and treatment. It was a \u201cmajor turning point\u201d in her life, she said, one that led her to take \u201ca leap of faith\u201d and leave her job.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI had a deep\u00a0yearning to fulfil other life aspirations,\u201d Lee said.<\/span><\/p>\n Lee had been writing as a hobby while in legal practice. She volunteered with National Parks Board (NParks), taking photos and writing about Singapore\u2019s parks. When literary festivals came around, she would take leave to attend them \u2013 \u201cto treat myself to a \u2018mental spa\u2019 to stimulate my creative juices\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n While on sabbatical, she had\u00a0lunch with her friend Hidayah Amin, founder of\u00a0<\/span>Helang Books<\/span><\/a>, a local independent publishing house.<\/span><\/p>\n Lee asked her: Why don\u2019t bookstores in Singapore carry books for persons with vision loss?<\/span><\/p>\n Lee didn\u2019t have any personal connection with\u00a0<\/span>visually impaired people<\/span><\/a>.
