{"id":84281,"date":"2026-09-12T08:04:53","date_gmt":"2026-09-12T00:04:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=84281"},"modified":"2026-09-12T08:04:53","modified_gmt":"2026-09-12T00:04:53","slug":"chinas-scientific-rise-is-being-driven-by-returning-expertise-especially-chemists-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=84281","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s scientific rise is being driven by returning expertise \u2013 especially chemists | News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Amid several high-profile departures of prominent US-based chemists for China, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chemistryworld.com\/news\/is-the-us-witnessing-the-start-of-a-brain-drain-of-chemists-to-china\/4023959.article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including chemistry Nobel laureate Omar Yaghi<\/a>, economic analysis indicates that higher-quality scientists are increasingly the ones returning there from the US, <a title=\"Brain Circulation and Knowledge Creation: Evidence from Elite Chinese Scientists\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hwtang.com\/uploads\/3\/0\/7\/2\/3072318\/brain_drain_draft_july31.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">especially in chemistry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The number of returnees to China rose from 31 scientists in 2004 \u2013 more than 40% of which came from the US \u2013 to over 1400 in 2022 \u2013 over half of which came from the US. The data shows that between 2004 and 2022 about 10,000 scientists of Chinese origin had gone back to China, including over 5500 from the US.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to US-based Chinese scientists, the top performers \u2013 based on the share of citations their papers receive \u2013 have become progressively more likely to go back to China. And this shift over that 18-year period appears to have been driven by chemistry .<\/p>\n<p>While the likelihood of a more highly cited chemist returning to China over a less highly cited one grew nearly five percentage points between 2003 and 2022, it actually declined among physicists and life scientists.<\/p>\n<p>The performance of these \u2018sea turtles\u2019 \u2013 a pun on the Mandarin slang for a student who studies abroad and then returns \u2013 once they come back to China follows a similar pattern. The returning chemists went on to outperform similarly qualified peers who remained in the US. By comparison, returning life scientists fell behind their peers in the US, and returning physicists showed mixed results.<\/p>\n<p>Study co-author <a href=\"https:\/\/discovery.nus.edu.sg\/1754-yin-bernard-yeung\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bernard Yeung<\/a>, who is with the National University of Singapore, notes that that he and<strong> <\/strong>fellow co-author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hkubs.hku.hk\/people\/heiwai-tang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heiwei Tang<\/a> from<strong> <\/strong>the University of Hong Kong are both \u2018returnees\u2019. Yeung, a Hong Kong-born economist and naturalised US citizen, relocated from New York University to Singapore in 2008, and Tang moved from Johns Hopkins University (JHU) to Hong Kong in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We are basically trying to use the data to tell a story about our experience,\u2019 Yeung tells <em>Chemistry World<\/em>. \u2018We observed China\u2019s surge \u2013 its delivery in frontier science,\u2019 he notes, adding that the team focused only on publications in the top tier scientific journals because they are credible.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"They_find_their_home_territory_appealing\">\u2018They find their home territory appealing\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>\u2018The reason that China is uniquely good at chemistry is because the government invests a lot in this area, and chemistry also fits China\u2019s comparative advantage \u2013 it is an experimental science that requires simple, relatively non-expensive labs, compared to things like supercolliders, for example,\u2019 he explains. \u2018There are many, many Chinese who went overseas, and now they find their home territory appealing because of the government\u2019s investment in education overall, but particularly in science.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Stanford University\u2019s Center on China\u2019s Economy and Institutions states that returnees have fuelled China\u2019s ascent in science, if unevenly.<strong> <\/strong>\u2018The increase in scientists returning to China from overseas, mostly from the US, has coincided with China\u2019s growing presence in elite science,\u2019 <a title=\"China\u2019s Scientific Rise Is Increasingly Fueled by Scientists Coming Home\" href=\"https:\/\/sccei.fsi.stanford.edu\/china-briefs\/chinas-scientific-rise-increasingly-fueled-scientists-coming-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the centre stated<\/a>. \u2018The findings suggest that the value of recruiting scientists home lies only partly in the returnees\u2019 own productivity; a substantial share comes from how their presence reshapes the labs, collaborations, and research cultures around them.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"J M Berg | Google Scholar\" href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=MZ6qrPUAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeremy Berg<\/a>, a biochemist who was director of the US National Institutes of Health\u2019s (NIH\u2019s) National Institute of General Medical Sciences, says he\u2019s had a chance to observe some aspects of this \u2018brain drain\u2019 directly. One example he points to is structural biologist <a href=\"https:\/\/ygshi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yigong Shi<\/a>, who was in his lab at JHU, whom Berg describes as \u2018the most talented and ambitious scientist of his age\u2019 that he had ever encountered.<\/p>\n<p>After JHU, Shi went on to other prestigious appointments in the US but was recruited back to his alma mater Tsinghua University in Beijing as a dean around 2008. Ten years later, he co-founded Westlake University, the first private research university in China.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018As Chinese universities become stronger and recruit top-flight faculty, the momentum will only grow,\u2019 Berg predicts.
