Women are vastly under-represented in ancient Chinese literature. The few who appear, often in myth or semi-fiction, serve primarily to reflect that era\u2019s moral expectations for women.<\/p>\n

From filial warriors to patriotic seductresses and femmes fatales, these women have one thing in common \u2013 they all trade personal autonomy for survival in a man\u2019s world.<\/p>\n

Here are three fictional women in Chinese history and what makes their names live on to this day.<\/p>\n

1. Hua Mulan<\/h3>\n

The only historical record of Hua Mulan is the Ballad of Mulan<\/em>, a melodic 332-character folk poem believed to have been written during China\u2019s Northern Wei dynasty (386-535).<\/p>\n

The poem begins with a melancholic Hua: \u201cThe sound of one sigh after another \/ As Mulan weaves at the doorway \/ No sound of the loom and shuttle \/ Only that of the girl lamenting.\u201d<\/p>\n

It goes on to recount how Hua\u2019s ageing father is drafted into the army because her family does not have an adult son and one man from every family must serve. But instead, Hua decides to disguise herself as a man and fight in her father\u2019s place.<\/p>\n

She serves on the battlefield for over a decade, her skill and bravery helping her rise through the ranks while maintaining her male disguise. Upon victory, the emperor offers her lavish rewards, but Hua refuses and asks only for a horse to take her back to her family.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
