Apple has finally unveiled its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo<\/b>, alongside the flagship iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max<\/b>. But this has also raised the inevitable question: which new iPhone should you choose?<\/p>\n
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max<\/b> will be instantly familiar to most people, and although the latter has a larger screen and battery, we\u2019ll treat them as one option here since they share the same key features. As with previous iterations, both phones offer better cameras, plenty of performance and the familiarity of a candybar design. Then there is the iPhone Duo<\/b>, which comes in a passport-sized foldable body that opens to reveal a much larger 7.6-inch display \u2013 but costs an eye-watering S$3,099<\/b> for the base model.<\/p>\n
Yet, despite their very different appearances, the three phones share quite a lot beneath the screen. All are powered by the same A20 Pro chip<\/b>, have ProMotion displays, Wi-Fi 7, and storage options ranging from 256GB to 2TB. So, choosing the Duo does not mean sacrificing performance, although you will have to make concessions elsewhere.<\/p>\n Burgundy is the new flagship colour for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.<\/p>\n Photo: HWZ<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n The Duo might be the most expensive iPhone, but it does not have Apple\u2019s most capable camera system. That honour still belongs to the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, which have a trio of 48-megapixel cameras comprising (Main, Ultra Wide and Telephoto units).<\/p>\n The new Fusion Main is the main highlight and features a physical variable aperture on its 48MP Fusion Main Camera built using a six-blade mechanical diaphragm, which offers four aperture settings between f\/1.48 and f\/4.0.<\/p>\n The Duo only has 48-megapixel Main (but without physical variable aperture) and Ultra Wide cameras. While these are probably enough for everyday photos, telephoto is a big miss in my opinion, especially for frequent travellers.<\/p>\n The iPhone 18 Pro weighs 211g, while the larger Pro Max comes in at a hefty 249g. Surprisingly, the Duo is heavier than the latter at 254g, although weight is only part of the story.<\/p>\n When closed, the Duo is 11.3mm thick and 84.1mm wide. Its shorter, passport-sized body should fit inside most pockets, but I suspect that extra thickness and width will be more noticeable than the 5g difference between it and the Pro Max. The regular 18 Pro remains the easier choice if you want something that is reasonably comfortable to use with one hand.<\/p>\n Apple has dropped Face ID from the Duo and brought back Touch ID<\/b>, with the fingerprint reader integrated into its side button. This means it can unlock consistently whether the phone is folded or open, so the decision makes sense even if it feels like a step backward.<\/p>\n Both iPhone 18 Pros retain Face ID through their 18-megapixel Centre Stage cameras, and they also get the Action button that is absent from the Duo. These may sound like relatively minor differences, but unlocking your phone is something you do many times a day and I know taking away Face ID is a deal-breaker for some iPhone owners.<\/p>\n The Fusion Main camera on the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro comes with a physical variable aperture.<\/p>\n Photo: HWZ<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n Apple says the Duo has a Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover, Ceramic Shield on its outer panels and a scratch-resistant coating over the folding screen. It even carries the same IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating as the Pro models, which is impressive for a foldable.<\/p>\n But let it be said that the Duo is still Apple\u2019s first attempt at a foldable phone. The inner screen isn\u2019t as hard as conventional smartphone glass, while the hinge could wear over time. I am not saying the Duo will have durability problems, but if you\u2019re the type that hold on to your iPhone for years \u2013 instead of doing the annual or biennial upgrade \u2013 then it\u2019s not a stretch to say that the iPhone 18 Pro will, by all logic, last better than the iPhone Duo.<\/p>\n The 256GB iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,899<\/b>, while the equivalent Pro Max costs $2,099<\/b>. That makes the base Duo S$1,200 more expensive than the Pro and S$1,000 more than the Pro Max.<\/p>\n Of course, the Duo has two screens and feels more like an iPad mini when unfolded. But that does not make the price any easier to swallow, especially when it also has the less versatile camera system.<\/p>\n There\u2019s no two ways about it; the iPhone Duo is expensive.<\/p>\n Photo: HWZ<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n Diagonal measurements do not quite explain how much bigger the Duo\u2019s 7.6-inch inner screen is. Apple says it provides 50% display area than the 6.9-inch Pro Max<\/b>, giving it a display footprint that\u2019s more akin to the iPad mini. This should make reading, going through photos and even playing games a better experience. It also has a nano-texture finish to reduce glare, while retaining ProMotion and the same peak brightness as the Pro displays.<\/p>\n Apple has adapted iOS 27 to make better use of the larger screen, including the ability to run two apps side by side through Split View. You could keep a website open while writing an e-mail or watch a video while typing a Google document. Like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, the iPhone Duo is a great device for media consumption.<\/p>\n It is not going to replace an iPad or laptop for serious work, but it should be much less restrictive than constantly jumping between apps on the iPhone 18 Pro or even the larger Pro Max.<\/p>\n The inner screen gives games more room for their touchscreen controls, while videos can be viewed at a larger size depending on their aspect ratio. The same A20 Pro chip found in the Pro models also means the Duo should not be lacking in performance.<\/p>\n More interestingly, you can partially fold the Duo into a tent mode – where you position it literally like a tent, allowing you to watch videos at a comfortable angle when the phone is placed on a table, or for taking or for taking a FaceTime call and not having to hold the phone.<\/p>\n While the iPhone 18 Pro is great for creating content, the iPhone Duo\u2019s larger (when unfolded) display makes it the better device for consuming content.<\/p>\n Photo: HWZ<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n The Duo may have fewer cameras, but its second display gives it a few tricks that the Pro models simply cannot copy. Duo Preview<\/b> allows the person being photographed to see the shot on the outer screen, while Kid Cue<\/b> shows animations to encourage children to look towards the camera. Smart Take<\/b> can even detect when everyone is ready and capture the photo automatically.<\/p>\n The Pro models offer better photography capabilities overall, but the Duo may prove more convenient in some specific situations.<\/p>\n The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are familiar upgrades. They are faster, last longer and have better cameras than previous iPhones, but the way you use them has not fundamentally changed.<\/p>\n The Duo is different. It can function as a compact phone, open into a small tablet, and stand on its own for videos and calls. It will also support the Apple Pencil (USB-C)<\/b> later this year, which could prove useful for handwritten notes and image editing.<\/p>\n That does not automatically make it better, but it does make the Duo the more exciting purchase.
