new Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) campus on Coney Island<\/span><\/a> officially opened on Sept 11, allowing all Secondary 3 students to experience an outdoor adventure camp by 2030.<\/p>\nNestled on the eastern side of the tree-lined island off Punggol, the 12ha campus is OBS\u2019 largest, featuring more than 70 high-adventure elements and more than 30 team-based challenges.<\/p>\n
These include wheelchair-accessible elements so students with disabilities \u2013 who were excluded from some activities previously \u2013 can join their peers.<\/p>\n
The new facility was opened by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. He was accompanied by David Neo, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, and Second Minister for Education, and Goh Hanyan, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Culture, Community and Youth, and Sustainability and the Environment.<\/p>\n
At the campus\u2019 official opening on Sept 11, PM Wong said opportunities will be expanded for older students from the Institute of Technical Education, polytechnics and universities to try OBS\u2019 leadership programmes, so it would \u201cbecome a rite of passage for every young Singaporean\u201d.<\/p>\n
Building young people\u2019s characters has become even more important in a more complex and volatile world, he added.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe cannot shield young people from every setback or difficulty, but we must continue to equip them with the capabilities and the ability to face adversity with confidence and grit, and that is exactly what OBS is designed to do,\u201d said PM Wong.<\/p>\n
