For those too young to have attended a live concert by Hong Kong Cantopop icon Leslie Cheung Kwok-wing<\/span>, who died on April 1, 2003, appreciation often relies on recordings of his performances and exhibitions dedicated to his career and legacy.<\/div>\n
While many retrospectives over the years have celebrated Cheung\u2019s achievements and influence in film and music, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum\u2019s latest offering<\/span>, \u201cMiss You Much. Leslie 70th Birthday. Exhibition\u201d, offers a much more intimate and rare look at his private life and his relationship with fans. Cheung would have turned 70 on September 12.<\/div>\n

Running from September 9 to May 10 next year to commemorate Cheung\u2019s 70th birthday, the showcase features more than 300 exhibits lent by his long-time partner Daffy Tong Hok-tak, his manager Florence Chan Sock-fun and Cheung\u2019s industry friends, alongside items from the museum\u2019s own collection.<\/p>\n

Among the expected items are vinyl records, classic stage costumes, film posters and stills, music trophies, and pop culture memorabilia. At first glance, these items may give visitors the impression that it is just another show about Cheung\u2019s stardom, but a closer look reveals that they have been selected and curated to present him not just as an idol, but as a genuine friend and creative artist.<\/p>\n

The entrance to the exhibition features a giant origami crane sculpture against a butterfly backdrop. This transports visitors back to the 10th anniversary of Cheung\u2019s death in 2013, when local and overseas fans folded and collected 1,900,119 \u2013 later updated to 1,956,912 \u2013 paper cranes in his memory for a showcase at Times Square in Causeway Bay, setting the Guinness World Record for the world\u2019s largest paper crane exhibition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
