It also means that, physically, it’s very comparable to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8. Indeed, I’ve been living with a Galaxy Z Fold8 for the past week in anticipation of the iPhone Duo, and I can confirm that the two feel quite similar in the hands. The key difference, however, is that the Fold8 feels lighter and slimmer, while the Duo feels chunkier and more substantial.

Apple is also keen to point out that both the outer and main display share the same aspect ratio, so content should scale and render appropriately. Unsurprisingly, in my short time with the phone, trying only the native Apple apps, everything looks as it should. One-handed operation of the cover screen is doable, though the aspect ratio of the cover screen makes the display more squarish than we are used to from iPhones. I also like that the outer display is curved on one side to make it easy to see which side to open the Duo from.

Can you see the crease?

Photo: HWZ

Closed, the iPhone Duo has a thickness of 11.3mm. For example, the Duo goes into Standby mode when you position it like a tent. I also saw a demo where one half of the main display was showing a video and the bottom was showing playback controls. Beyond that, the iPhone Duo also has a neat transition effect when you fold and unfold it, where one display slowly goes to sleep, and the other wakes up.

You have to look very hard to notice the crease. You can feel it if you run your fingers across the display, but it’s barely visible, even at angles. One reason for that is the phone’s complex hinge. The other reason is that the main display has a special nano-texture coating, which reduces glare and reflections. And in case you were wondering, no, it doesn’t need to be cleaned with a special polishing cloth. Phew.

The iPhone Duo has two cameras. The second bit is important because foldables are usually more fragile than traditional candybar-type phones, but the Duo feels extremely well put together and has an IP68 dust and water resistance rating – the same as the iPhone 18 Pro. Also, it seems that Apple has put a lot of thought into its software and I look forward to trying out the new ways to multitask and shoot with it. I can’t wait to spend more time with it.
