{"id":8386,"date":"2025-11-02T19:23:58","date_gmt":"2025-11-02T11:23:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=8386"},"modified":"2025-11-02T19:23:58","modified_gmt":"2025-11-02T11:23:58","slug":"17-suspects-to-be-charged-in-scam-related-offences-linked-to-over-1-6m-in-losses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=8386","title":{"rendered":"17 suspects to be charged in scam-related offences linked to over $1.6m in losses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->Seventeen people will be charged next week for their alleged involvement in a string of scams that caused more than $1.6 million in losses, the police said on Nov 2.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The suspects \u2013 14 men and three women, aged between 17 and 45 \u2013 were arrested for their suspected roles in various scams, including government official impersonation, job, e-commerce, investment, fake buyer, remittance and malware-enabled phishing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Preliminary investigations found that the suspects allegedly relinquished or sold their bank accounts and Singpass credentials, enabling criminal syndicates to launder illicit proceeds. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Some are believed to have deceived banks into opening accounts before handing over their internet banking details to unknown individuals. One suspect is said to have assisted syndicates in withdrawing cash from multiple bank accounts via ATMs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The suspects will be charged between Nov 3 and 7 with offences linked to scam-related money mule activities. These include abetment to cheating, assisting another to retain benefits from criminal conduct, abetting unauthorised access to computer material, and the unlawful disclosure of password or access code.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Those convicted of cheating or assisting another to retain benefits from criminal conduct face jail terms of up to three years, fines or both. Facilitating unauthorised access to computer material carries a maximum penalty of two years\u2019 jail, a fine, or both for a first offence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The unlawful disclosure of password or access code carries up to three years\u2019 jail, a fine, or both.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The suspects will also face restrictions on access to certain banking services that could be used to move scam proceeds. Another nine people, aged between 16 and 55, are being investigated. One of them \u2013 a 55-year-old woman \u2013 previously fell victim to an internet love scam and lost about $300,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Close to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/scam-victims-in-spore-lost-456m-in-first-half-of-2025-with-almost-20000-cases-reported?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\"> half a billion dollars was lost to scams in the first half of 2025<\/p>\n<p><\/a>, with nearly 20,000 cases reported in Singapore.
