In its report, ISD highlighted several forms of extremism that are emerging in Singapore and beyond. CNA breaks down five of them.<\/p>\n
Composite Violent Extremism (CoVE)<\/strong><\/p>\n CoVE \u2013 also known as “salad bar” extremism \u2013 refers to a form of violent extremism where individuals subscribe to multiple, and sometimes conflicting, ideologies, rather than adhering to a single, coherent or unified worldview.<\/p>\n This results in personalised composite belief systems that individuals use to justify violence.<\/p>\n Singapore has seen three local CoVE cases since September 2025: A 15-year-old who supported Islamic State, subscribed to aspects of far-right and far-left extremist beliefs, and identified as an incel; a 14-year-old who supported Islamic State and held far-right extremist beliefs such as antisemitic and racial supremacist beliefs; and a 19-year-old who supported Hamas, held anti-West and anti-LGBTQ views and identified as an incel.<\/p>\n Far-Right Extremism<\/strong><\/p>\n Far-right extremism has traditionally been associated with white-supremacist and ethnonationalist ideologies. However, online far-right extremist communities are increasingly localising their narratives, ISD said.<\/p>\n The adapted narratives can encompass elements such as “East Asian supremacy”, anti-Muslim prejudice and antisemitism.<\/p>\n Nihilistic Violent Extremism (NVE)<\/strong><\/p>\n NVE refers to violence driven by a deep hostility towards society or humanity, where violence itself \u2013 rather than a clear political, religious or ideological goal \u2013 is a central motivation.<\/p>\n “NVE extremists essentially engage in violence for violence’s sake,” S Rajaratnam School of International Studies dean Kumar Ramakrishna told CNA previously.<\/span><\/p>\n NVE is particularly influenced by the online True Crime Community.<\/span><\/p>\n Extremism linked to the True Crime Community<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The True Crime Community is a broad, decentralised online subculture centred on real-life violent crime, where individuals glorify, celebrate and exhibit fan-like behaviour towards perpetrators of extreme violence.<\/span><\/p>\n While not inherently extremist, part of the True Crime Community subculture can overlap with NVE, where fascination with violent perpetrators turns into glorification, identification with their grievances or a desire to emulate their violent acts.<\/span><\/p>\n Extremism linked to the incel ideology<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The incel subculture \u2013 “incel” being short for “involuntary celibate” \u2013 is a <\/span>subculture of individuals<\/span>, mostly men, who identify as being unable to find a romantic or sexual partner despite desiring one.<\/span><\/p>\n The incel community is a subset of the “manosphere”, a broad online network of communities centred on male supremacism, anti-feminism and grievance-based views on gender.<\/span><\/p>\n
