SINGAPORE \u2013 Six women were on Sept 9 charged with offences under the Public Order Act, over unlawful events they took part in which were mainly linked to the Gaza conflict.<\/p>\n
The offences include being involved in public processions around the Istana and in an area close to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) building in New Phoenix Park.<\/p>\n
Kyal Sin Linn Naing, 22, and Amirah Mokhlis, 33, face one charge each, while Dayana Noor Mohamed, 36, and Nurul Afiqah Kamel, 33, were handed two charges each.<\/p>\n
Nur Sabrina Kamel, 32, who faces one charge under the same Act, was also charged with one count of harassment.<\/p>\n
The sixth accused \u2013 Elijah Tay \u2013 was handed nine charges in total.<\/p>\n
The 24-year-old faces six public order charges, two charges for refusing to answer a public servant\u2019s questions and one for knowingly committing an act prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony between different racial groups.<\/p>\n
All the women are Singaporeans, except for Kyal Sin Linn Naing, who is a Myanmar national and a Singapore permanent resident.<\/p>\n
The police in a statement on Sept 8 said that Nurul Afiqah and Dayana allegedly took part in a procession without a permit along the perimeter of the Istana, a prohibited area, on Feb 2, 2024.<\/p>\n
According to the police, the group had assembled along Orchard Road and walked towards the Istana, carrying umbrellas imprinted with watermelon images in support of the Palestinian cause.<\/p>\n
The fruit is a symbol of Palestinian resistance and solidarity.<\/p>\n
Tay was at The Arts and Civil Space community hub in Ubi Crescent on Feb 2, 2024, when she allegedly led a chant during an event that was live-streamed, saying \u201cFrom the river to the sea, Palestine will be free\u201d, which supports the elimination of the Jewish State of Israel.<\/p>\n
Tay and Kyal Sin Linn Naing are said to have participated in a public procession without a permit.<\/p>\n
The two women and other members in a group are accused of moving from an area near Novena MRT station to the nearby MHA building to deliver letters on June 7, 2024.<\/p>\n
The letters opposed the Maintenance of Racial Harmony Bill<\/span><\/a>, which was later passed in Parliament in February 2025.<\/p>\n Among other things, the law empowers the authorities to issue restraining orders against individuals\u00a0involved in making content that prejudices Singapore\u2019s racial harmony.<\/p>\n According to the police, many people in the group wore shirts that said: \u201cThere are no universities left in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n The group allegedly later issued a statement to give details of what they had done.<\/p>\n People turned up at the State Courts on Sept 9 to show support for the six people who are allegedly involved in unlawful public assemblies.<\/p>\n ST PHOTO: AZMI ATHNI<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n Separately, Nur Sabrina, Nurul Afiqah, Amirah and Dayana are said to have organised a mass kite-flying event held at Marina Barrage to publicise a cause in relation to the Gaza conflict on Oct 27, 2024.<\/p>\n The event was held without a permit, said the police.<\/p>\n Court documents stated that it was held to publicise a cause for children who died in Gaza after Oct 7, 2023.<\/p>\n Nur Sabrina was at the event when she allegedly flashed a lewd hand gesture at a public servant there.<\/p>\n Some of Tay\u2019s alleged offences were in relation to candlelight vigils held near Changi Prison in November 2024 and January 2025.<\/p>\n The vigils were to mark the executions of three convicted drug traffickers \u2013 Singaporeans Masoud Rahimi Mehrzad, 35, Syed Suhail Syed Zin, 48, and\u00a0Rosman Abdullah, 55.<\/p>\n When Tay was later interviewed at Bedok Police Division in January 2025, she allegedly refused to answer questions relating to the vigils.<\/p>\n Police said Tay also allegedly organised a public assembly that same month without a permit in front of a building in the National University of Singapore.<\/p>\n The police spokesperson said: \u201cThe group gathered multiple individuals to place shoes and a white burial shroud at the location to demonstrate opposition to the ties between educational institutions in Singapore and Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n In February 2025, Tay was near the State Courts building when she allegedly took part in an assembly publicising a cause that seeks to abolish capital punishment in Singapore.<\/p>\n Five months after the event, Tay was interviewed at the Police Cantonment Complex where she is said to have refused to answer questions.<\/p>\n The six accused were each offered bail of $5,000 on Sept 9.
