But Cavalluna \u2013 Gate to the Otherworld<\/em>, an equestrian spectacle from Europe that combines high-level horsemanship, dance, acrobatics and theatre, takes equestrian experience and entertainment to another level.<\/p>\n

The production, which is presented by the Hong Kong Jockey Club<\/span> and runs until September 13 at Kai Tak Arena, features 54 horses of various breeds, sizes and colours. They are cast as characters in a fantastical tale about the sorceress Meerin and her journey from losing her magical powers to rediscovering faith in herself.<\/div>\n

But Cavalluna<\/em> \u2013 a name derived from caballo<\/em> and luna<\/em>, the Spanish words for horse and moon \u2013 is far more than a simple display of beautiful horses. The evening at the arena featured both breathtaking and thrilling moments that highlighted the riders\u2019 skills and their extraordinary partnership with the animals.<\/p>\n

In one scene, an evil wizard rides a galloping white horse hands-free. Set against Emmy-nominated composer Klaus Hillebrecht\u2019s soul-stirring score, it looked as though the wizard \u2013 with a giant crystal ball floating above \u2013 was magically flying across the arena.<\/p>\n

In another, the ponies won over the audience with adorable jumps, kicks and humorous, intentional disobedience as one lay on the ground like a puppy refusing to heed its trainer\u2019s call.<\/p>\n
