After years of rumours, Apple could finally launch its first foldable iPhone at its Surprise and Shine<\/b> keynote later tonight (10 September, 1am SGT). The device is reportedly expected to use a wider, book-style design with a 5- to 6-inch cover display and an 8-inch inner screen \u2013 similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8. But perhaps more ambitiously, Apple is also said to be working on a hinge and display that could make the crease far less noticeable.<\/p>\n
But what would it take for Singaporeans to actually buy one? We put that question to the HWZ forum community (thread and poll link), and the results suggest that Apple may have a bigger problem than the crease.<\/p>\n
At the time of writing, 63 out of 76 respondents, or almost 83%<\/b>, said that a price above S$3,000<\/b> would be a deal-breaker. This was comfortably ahead of every other concern in the poll, and it is not difficult to understand why. Current estimates suggest the foldable iPhone could start above that figure, potentially making it one of Apple\u2019s most expensive consumer devices.<\/p>\n
The display crease came next, with 52.6%<\/b>of respondents saying that a visible line would be a turn-off. Poor water resistance or durability<\/b> was close behind at 46.1%<\/b>. The absence of Face ID concerned 31.6%<\/b>, while 28.9% <\/b>considered the lack of a telephoto camera another deal-breaker. As this was a multiple-choice poll, respondents could select more than one concern.<\/p>\n
Size also emerged as an important consideration that was not included in the poll. Forum member \u201cWhiteHunter\u201d said they would consider the phone if it folded into something genuinely compact and pocketable. Others were less interested in having a larger display and would rather keep a lighter phone that can be comfortably operated with one hand.<\/p>\n
The caveat here is that the poll is hardly a scientific measure of the Singapore mobile phone market, and even the poll is taken from a tiny fraction of the community size (spoiler: there are more than 640,000 members in the forums). But it does show where the early scepticism lies.<\/p>\n
