The new Mate XT 2 is also the third tri-fold in Huawei\u2019s lineup, as the previously launched Huawei Mate XTs rolled out in only a few markets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Before we get into the foldable\u2019s upgrades, we noticed one of Huawei\u2019s biggest achievements to date: the Kirin 9050 Pro processor, based on a new scaling law it developed.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"kirin-9050-pro-the-debut-chip-with-logicfolding-tau-\" class=\"_subHeading1_1k87u_111 _base_1k87u_1\">Kirin 9050 Pro, the debut chip with LogicFolding Tau (\u03c4)<\/h2>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">This is mild nerd territory. If you\u2019re more interested in what the phone can do, you may skip past this section.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">In chip design, semiconductors (and their makers) grapple with diminishing returns as they attempt to squeeze more transistors into a very small space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Some observations, like Moore\u2019s law, assume semiconductor costs fall as component counts rise (more and tinier transistors in the same space).<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Readers who have heard of Moore\u2019s law would also know that its death and end have been predicted countless times. Depending on who you ask (e.g. 1, 2), it stopped being relevant in the 2010s, 2020s, yesterday, tomorrow, and never. You get the gist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Regardless, chip designers and engineers are still finding new ways to milk more power. One such idea is to stack components (transistors, silicon dies, lanes, you name it). It\u2019s pretty much the same logic as building high-rise apartment buildings to fit more people on the same parcel of land.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">The main reason why chip design is hard to crack comes down to two challenges. First, <b>heat<\/b> can destroy the chip if it isn\u2019t cooled properly and promptly. This invention has two outcomes: first, to find a new way for Huawei to achieve higher chipset performance without access to the technology needed to make cutting-edge chips (e.g., extreme ultraviolet lithography). Second, to minimise the impact of US sanctions that prevent them from competing widely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Huawei put out a jargon-filled statement after a highly exclusive, long, and dry keynote. To summarise, Huawei has experimented plenty with a new <b>LogicFolding<\/b> process (after designing and making hundreds of such chips along the way). The process <b>adjusts signal delay in chip paths<\/b> (coded as Time, therefore <b>\u03c4<\/b>, for Tau), instead of only shrinking already-nanometre-tiny transistors or stacking components. The reduction in signal paths is at every level of the chipset (device, circuit, chip, system),<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Naturally, its biggest detractors are skeptical because the twin questions of heat and efficiency are still up in the air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">This is where Huawei\u2019s new Huawei\u2019s tri-fold comes in. The Huawei Mate XT 2 uses the <b>Kirin 9050 Pro<\/b>, its first commercial chipset made using Huawei\u2019s new <b>LogicFolding Tau (\u03c4) process<\/b>, and consumers can finally get the device and <b>judge performance for themselves<\/b>. IP-rated dust and water resistance got bumped up to <b>IP58\/IP59<\/b>, and its cover glass also has added <b>anti-glare<\/b>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">It seems like Huawei also learnt a lot from Samsung\u2019s phones. For example, the Mate XT 2\u2019s three-panel screen module is further reinforced with <b>aerospace-grade steel and carbon fibre<\/b>, which sounds similar to Samsung\u2019s Flex Titanium (different materials, but similar display-module reinforcement techniques).<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Another is the <b>Smart Shield Privacy Screen<\/b>, which uses a dual-pixel design that lets users activate Privacy Mode to limit viewing angles. This is a similar underlying principle to Samsung\u2019s Privacy Display, which first debuted in its Galaxy S26 series devices. The Mate XT 2 can also activate this mode with a double-tap or via a shortcut button.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">The rear cameras also feature an upgraded True-to-Color Camera 3.0, a filter that cuts out 95% more infrared light interference than its predecessor. Besides a main camera, Huawei somehow also squeezed in a periscope telephoto shooter and an ultrawide. Plus, it now supports <b>Desk-Calendar shooting mode<\/b>, letting a tri-fold user take hands-free selfies and group photos.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"pricing-and-availability\" class=\"_subHeading1_1k87u_111 _base_1k87u_1\">Pricing and availability<\/h2>\n<p class=\"_base_1s8rd_1 _default_1s8rd_12\">Singapore availability hasn\u2019t been announced yet, but we know that the Huawei Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design retails at CNY 19,999 (~S$3,769.56). Official Mainland China retail begins on 12 September 2026.
