A new report offers a glimpse into just how constrained supply could be, with Apple reportedly producing only \u201ca few hundred\u201d <\/b>units a day <\/b>as it continues to fine-tune the manufacturing process.<\/p>\n
According to Nikkei Asia, Apple\u2019s notoriously strict quality-control standards have slowed production pace. The company reportedly ran an additional trial of the foldable iPhone last month to ensure that the device could be mass-produced while meeting its exact design specifications. The extra round of testing reportedly pushed commercial production back by several weeks.<\/b><\/p>\n
The additional trial was apparently needed to address two of the foldable iPhone\u2019s most closely watched components: \u201csurface flatness and the performance of its hinge<\/b>.\u201d<\/p>\n
Those two areas could also become Apple\u2019s biggest selling points. Apple is reportedly aiming for a foldable display with an almost invisible crease and a sophisticated hinge mechanism, allowing it to differentiate the device from the competition.<\/p>\n
Just last month, analyst Tim Culpan warned that supplies of the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and foldable iPhone could be severely constrained<\/b> because of the ongoing global memory chip shortage. Apple may therefore have to juggle not only the complexity of manufacturing a brand-new foldable form factor, but also tight supplies of critical components.<\/p>\n
There have also been concerns about Apple\u2019s initial launch strategy. ChannelNews Australia previously reported that the foldable iPhone could launch exclusively in the US<\/b>, with other markets receiving the device only in a second wave. A limited initial rollout would allow Apple to manage constrained inventory while it ramps up production.<\/p>\n
However, Bloomberg offered a more reassuring assessment. The publication reports that the foldable iPhone is expected to launch \u201c<\/b>at the same time or very close to it\u201d as the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and does not expect \u201cmassive delays or supply chain issues\u201d<\/b> to derail the retail launch.<\/p>\n
