Apple\u2019s renewed smart home ambitions could soon extend beyond speakers and connected accessories. The company is reportedly working on an AI-powered home security service<\/b> that could launch as early as 2027.<\/p>\n
According to Bloomberg, Apple is developing a privacy-focused home security camera that would use AI to monitor the surrounding environment<\/b>. The camera is expected to work alongside a broader home security and monitoring service, potentially giving Apple users another reason to build their smart home around the company\u2019s ecosystem.<\/p>\n
Privacy could be one of the biggest selling points. Rather than recording and storing footage whenever a trigger occurs, Apple\u2019s approach could use AI to analyse what is happening around the home and respond to relevant events. In theory, this would allow the system to detect unusual activity while reducing the number of triggers.<\/p>\n
Apple\u2019s interest in the category isn\u2019t entirely new. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported in 2024 that Apple was developing a smart home IP camera<\/b>, with the device expected to integrate closely with other Apple hardware and HomeKit. Kuo argued that Apple\u2019s ecosystem and tight software integration could give the camera an advantage over competing smart home products.<\/p>\n
The rumoured security camera is also expected to form part of a much larger smart home strategy. It could work alongside Apple\u2019s rumoured smart home hub, which is expected to debut this year, while a Face ID-equipped smart doorbell is also reportedly in development.<\/p>\n
Apple already offers HomeKit Secure Video<\/b>, which allows compatible third-party cameras to securely stream and store footage in iCloud. The proposed AI-focused system would represent a different approach, shifting some of the emphasis from recording video to understanding what is happening around the home.<\/p>\n
