There’s no question that it’s a risk. Go too soon after GTA 6, and a colossal portion of the gaming audience will be otherwise occupied; too soon before, and gamers will have earmarked their time and disposable income already.

Nintendo, however, doesn’t seem to care. The company loves to give the impression that it is blithely unconcerned with what the rest of the gaming world is up to, but I’m sure that’s not the case. So what gives it the confidence to sidle so close to what’s expected to be the biggest entertainment launch of all time — confidence that nobody else in the game industry seems to have?

For one thing, it has a different audience. Though there’s certainly a sizable crossover between Nintendo fans and GTA players among core gamers, Nintendo and Rockstar have mainstream followings that are equally massive and quite distinct. Nintendo’s family base is one of the few gaming constituencies where GTA 6‘s impact won’t be felt so strongly. On a more practical note, GTA 6 is not being released on Switch 2, so Ocarina of Time has a completely clear runway on that system.

But I also think there’s a justified bullishness in Nintendo’s move. If just one game can be guaranteed to cut through the GTA noise, it’s this one. Zelda is a treasured franchise that has reached a new level of mainstream consciousness since Breath of the Wild. Players’ relationship to the Zelda franchise in general, and Ocarina of Time in particular, is intense and reverential. This might just be a remake, but it’s a remake of a game of truly legendary stature, one that’s routinely considered the greatest ever made.

Nintendo’s artistic choices in remaking it are bound to stir controversy — they already have — but this only adds to the sense of drama. This release is an event; certainly the biggest this year this side of GTA 6.

    <!-- ============================================================
     Polygon — Wishlister Newsletter Signup Widget — Markup
     Pairs with polygon-newsletter-widget.css (shared with the
     Switchboard widget — same component system, new copy/art).
     Needs Montserrat loaded once on the page:

     IMPORTANT — image src below is a placeholder. But there’s opportunism and pragmatism in the choice of release date, too. Ocarina has stepped into the middle of a gaping three-week vacancy in the fall release schedule of a kind that’s rarely, if ever, been seen before. For a while, it has the stage to itself.

Nintendo’s been brave — but, let’s be honest, only so brave.
