After months of anticipation, we finally have some firm details on Nintendo\u2019s The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time<\/em> remake. The Switch 2 reimagining took center stage during the Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, as we got to see a new trailer and a live gameplay demo. We got a lot <\/em>of information about the remake in between those two segments.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

After combing through it again, the trailer was especially filled with some blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moments. It confirmed returning mechanics that weren\u2019t shown in the gameplay demo, showed off some fan-favorite bosses, and gave a small taste of some changes coming in the remake. Here are a handful of details we noticed in the juicy trailer.<\/p>\n

The most significant change that’s easy to miss is the remake’s overhauled UI. A lot has been changed from the Nintendo 64 original and its 3DS upgrade. For instance, Link no longer has to equip his ocarina to use it: It’s not a quick button tap away on the D-pad. The UI for items has changed quite a bit too, trading the original game’s five-circle UI for a single box that you can seemingly scroll through with the Joy-cons’ right bumper. There’s also no rupee counter on-screen, and we’ve yet to see Link’s green magic bar (though the latter is likely just because we saw an early snippet of gameplay set before he gains magic).<\/p>\n

While we saw a bit of combat during the gameplay demo, we didn\u2019t get to see all of Link\u2019s moves. The trailer gave us a small tease of his sword skills beyond his basic slashing. Most notably, we get to see a spin attack around the one-minute mark, as young Link charges his sword and wipes out a gaggle of Leevers in Desert Colossus.<\/p>\n

In the original Ocarina of Time<\/em>, you can do a light bit of fast traveling thanks to a friendly owl. That mechanic appears to be returning in the remake, though with a slight perspective twist. When flying in the original game, you\u2019d be treated to a first-person view as Link soars over levels. A quick clip of Link flying over Lake Hylia now shows that those sequences will happen in third-person. It\u2019s a subtle change, but one that shows that the remake is taking a few cinematic liberties.<\/p>\n

One big question I had when the remake was revealed was how Nintendo was going to handle Great Fairies. In the original game, they notoriously wore revealing outfits. That seemed destined to change in a remake with a more realistic art style, but that doesn\u2019t seem to be the case. A quick glimpse of a Great Fairy shows that they have the same iconic outfits, showing that Nintendo is staying faithful to the original character designs here.<\/p>\n

We saw some chickens in the trailer, and that fact will mean a lot to anyone who has played Ocarina of Time<\/em>. Cuccos are menaces in the original game, thanks to the fact that they will gang up on Link if he dares to slash one of their kind. We don\u2019t see that in the trailer, but we do see Cuccos appear twice in the trailer: one is roaming around Hyrule Castle Town, and we see Link using another to glide through the air.<\/p>\n

Near the end of the trailer, we get to see a whole bunch of bosses, including Gohma and Volvagia. If you watch closely, you can also get a glimpse at one of the Zelda series\u2019 best recurring villains: Twinrova. The witches, who guard the Spirit Temple, make for one of Ocarina of Time<\/em>\u2019s most memorable fights, and you can see a bit of it when Link braces for an ice beam strike.<\/p>\n

There’s so much to take in once Link gets to Hyrule Castle Town that it can be easy to miss some of the details Nintendo showed during the gameplay demo. For instance, you can get a glimpse at some of the classic spots in the town’s market. Take a close look, and you’ll see both the Shooting Gallery and the Bombchu Bowling Alley, all but confirming that minigames will make a comeback in the remake.<\/p>\n
