It’s official: 2026 might just be the year of the RPG. This summer saw the releases of Beast of Reincarnation<\/em> and Mistfall Hunter,<\/em> among others. Only a few weeks into fall, Onimusha: Way of the Sword<\/em> and The Blood of Dawnwalker<\/em> have both launched to mostly positive reviews. Still to come are remasters of beloved titles like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt<\/em>, with enhanced visuals and new features, and a Kingdom Hearts <\/em>collection for modern consoles.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

If you look past big-name remasters, you’ll also see a wealth of new RPGs on the horizon, including a new Fire Emblem <\/em>and a turn-based game based on the book series Warrior Cats<\/em>. All the games listed below are due out before the end of 2026, but with so many titles coming out, you may just be playing these well into 2027.<\/p>\n

Following Palworld’s <\/em>successful full-game launch this summer, Aniimo<\/em> aims to be the next big open-world action RPG with creature-collecting elements. Players assume the role of a Pathfinder in the mythical world of Idyll, where more than 200 unique creatures can be captured. Aniimo<\/em> introduces a mechanic unique to the creature-catcher genre, “Twining,” a mechanic that lets players merge with creatures to unlock new abilities. The game will be free to play at launch.<\/p>\n

Ever since the trailer for Fortune’s Weave<\/em> was released in 2025, fans have been eagerly awaiting the latest mainline title in the Fire Emblem<\/em> series. The newest title centers on a “Heroic Games” tournament where players can choose one of four protagonists to follow. In an early preview, Polygon’s Josh Broadwell wrote that Fortune’s Weave<\/em> is better than Fire Emblem: Three Houses<\/em>, writing: “After playing 10 hours of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave<\/em>, it looks like Intelligent Systems might’ve figured out how to break the curse and make a Fire Emblem <\/em>with all the good parts and none of the old problems.”<\/p>\n

Trails In The Sky 2nd Chapter <\/em>is set to be a fresh, modernized take on the 20-year-old game The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC<\/em>, which came out in Japan in 2006. It is a sequel to last year’s Trails In The Sky 1st Chapter, <\/em>and the story continues right where the first left off. In the 2nd Chapter,<\/em> players follow Estelle Bright in her journey across the kingdom to find her missing brother. Like its predecessor, the 2nd Chapter <\/em>retains a rich narrative and turn-based combat style, but adds mini-games such as fishing and poker for players to enjoy as a break from the main storyline.<\/p>\n

Dark Arisen<\/em> is the forthcoming expansion for Dragon’s Dogma 2,<\/em> the 2024 game which Polygon writer Michael McWhertor praised for “giving players freedom to discover the world at their pace and forge memorable and personal stories.” This DLC promises even more to explore, transporting players to the frost-themed region of Norgan. It also introduces a new storyline centered on a woman named Ay and, of course, more dragons. The expansion also adds 12 new dungeons, a relic system that unlocks powerful gear, and new character customization options. Dragon’s Dogma 2<\/em> is required to play the expansion, though bundles including both the base game and Dark Arisen<\/em> are available.<\/p>\n

Resonance<\/em> marks a return to both Final Fantasy’s<\/em> old turn-based battle elements and Square Enix’s retro HD-2D art style. Additionally, fans will see plenty of their favorite Final Fantasy <\/em>heroes in this game \u2014 they appear as Visions to assist party members in battle.<\/p>\n

More than two decades after the first Warrior Cats<\/em> book, Into the Wild<\/em>, was published, an RPG promises to immerse you into the same world originally created by Victoria Holmes. Clans of the Forest<\/em>, due out in October, invites players to create and customize their own cat and choose one of four clans, each of which has a unique story-based campaign to play through. In addition to allowing players to travel across iconic regions from the books \u2014 including the forests of ThunderClan and the swamps of ShadowClan \u2014 the game features survival and crafting elements. Clans of the Forest <\/em>will also offer multiple game modes, including online battles against other players, to give players a reason to keep playing after finishing the campaign.<\/p>\n

Phantom Blade Zero<\/em> mixes storytelling with fast-paced action and draws on classic Chinese martial arts. The player assumes the role of Soul, an elite assassin who works for a group called The Order. After Soul is framed for murder, the player’s job is to seek out answers while Soul is hunted by his former comrades. In a preview video for the game, Creative Consultant Donnie Yen said, “Rooted in the traditions of Chinese martial arts, Phantom Blade Zero<\/em> embraces both imaginations and distinct cultural elements to create a new aesthetic we call ‘Kungfupunk.'”<\/p>\n

The Dragon Quest <\/em>series is officially returning with a new spin-off, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World<\/em>. The monster-taming RPG follows young versions of Bianca and Nera, characters originally seen in Dragon Quest V,<\/em> as they scout the land, recruiting and befriending monsters along the way. Think of it as Pok\u00e9mon <\/em>meets Palworld <\/em>\u2014 y<\/em>ou can pit your monsters against enemies to strengthen them, and you can synthesize (combine) monsters to create stronger ones. There are more than 500 familiar and new monsters to collect from across the Dragon Quest<\/em> series. Polygon writer Jenn Glennon shared some of the most adorable ones earlier this summer.<\/p>\n

Blighted<\/em>, an action RPG from Drinkbox Studios due out by the end of the year, puts players in the role of a lone survivor in a world consumed by a deadly blight. Harnessing that power, the player fights through grungy, psychedelic environments, facing enemies and bosses to unlock memories of the dead. Blighted<\/em> is dripping in Metroidvania and Souls-like elements, and it promises a dynamic difficulty system for players of all skill levels. Players can also team up with a friend in an optional co-op multiplayer mode.<\/p>\n

Witchbrook<\/em> fits the bill for players who enjoy Stardew Valley\u2019s<\/em> art style and life-sim gameplay. The forthcoming witch-themed life-sim, due out before the end of 2026, lets players start a new life as a witch-in-training in the town of Mossport. As players explore, they can make friends and find potential romantic partners, all while honing their magical abilities. Witchbrook<\/em> will offer online co-op, inviting up to four players to explore Mossport together.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
