Ryan Wee has what he considers a good number of friends.<\/p>\n
The self-professed introvert does not need many. He is content with his current circle of friends, which includes about five people he calls close friends \u2013 those he can confide in and be vulnerable with.<\/p>\n
But maintaining those ties has taken more effort as the 26-year-old, who works in a content marketing agency, ages into adulthood.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s hard to arrange a date to meet when people have jobs and are getting married,\u201d Wee says. \u201cThere are many competing interests.\u201d<\/p>\n
Making new friends is even tougher, he thinks.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think people are a bit more guarded in Singapore; we\u2019re not so outgoing that we\u2019ll strike up a conversation with someone on the train,\u201d says Wee, who studied history at University College London.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll approach people in a specific setting, like some sort of common interest club or (social) event,\u201d he adds. \u201cBut outside of that it\u2019s quite unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wee is likely not alone in feeling this. Friendship circles in Singapore have been shrinking, especially among young people. But some young people are also discovering that a shared purpose can bring them closer to others.<\/p>\n
Maintaining friendships<\/h2>\n
According to the National Youth Council\u2019s (NYC) National Youth Survey, the proportion of youth with more than three close friends dropped from 56 per cent in 2013 to 48 per cent in 2025. One in three youth say they are keen to make new friends, and over one in two want to improve their current relationships, according to a NYC Youth Needs Survey conducted in 2025.<\/p>\n Such findings come together to shape the SG Youth Plan, launched in July 2026. The five-year roadmap, based on responses from over 60,000 youth aged 15 to 35, aims to help young Singaporeans become more confident, connected and able to contribute.<\/p>\n Narasimman Tivasiha Mani, co-founder and executive director of Impart, a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping youth facing adversities, says young people face different challenges in forming and maintaining friendships at different junctures in their lives.<\/p>\n Those in school often have their time taken up with classes, tuition and extracurricular activities, he says. Meanwhile, youth transitioning from school to work face \u201can abrupt drop-off in relational health once they step outside institutional safety nets\u201d, he adds, such as the natural common spaces schools offer.<\/p>\n Spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) and the National Youth Council (NYC), the SG Youth Plan is a five-year roadmap shaped by responses from over 60,000 youth aged 15 to 35.<\/p>\n The SG Youth Plan aims to help young Singaporeans develop confidence to navigate life transitions, forge meaningful connections, and give back to society.<\/p>\n \u201cThird spaces\u201d are defined as casual places outside of school, work and home, where people can mingle and hang out.<\/p>\n PHOTO: ST FILE<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n One of the key initiatives is the creation of 12 \u201cthird spaces\u201d \u2013 casual places outside of school, work or home where youth can hang out.<\/p>\n NYC will also create about 20,000 social, hobby, and interest-based opportunities for youth to explore what they enjoy. These can be found on its digital platform Discover.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n \u201cFriendship requires unstructured, low-pressure shared hours,\u201d says Narasimman Tivasiha Mani, the co-founder and executive director of Impart.<\/p>\n \u201cThird spaces and interest groups act as physical \u2018containers\u2019 \u2013 safe, consistent spaces where youth can regularly interact without pressure,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n Volunteering, joining and starting ground-up projects are some ways youth can forge connections while giving back to society.<\/p>\n Elijah Chao, 22, co-founded The Resonance Project (Reso) in 2021 while he was studying at Anglo-Chinese School (Independent). Reso is a youth-led non-profit collective that brings music education to the community.<\/p>\n Chao plays the drums and later taught himself the guitar. Jamming with his friends led him and his co-founder \u2013 a fellow schoolmate \u2013 to think about those who did not have the privilege of learning music.<\/p>\n Youth-led music education collective The Resonance Project runs ukulele lessons for seniors in active ageing centres.<\/p>\n PHOTO: CMG<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n \u201cWe wanted to (teach music to) kids who may not have had access to the same musical experiences that we did,\u201d he says. The initiative has since expanded to include seniors in active ageing centres.<\/p>\n NYC says it will commit $20 million to support up to 3,000 youth-led projects over the next five years.<\/p>\n An inaugural youth action marketplace \u2013 Impact, IRL<\/span><\/a> \u2013 co-organised by NYC and the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre, will be held on Oct 31 to bring together public, private and philanthropic partners to help fund such projects.<\/p>\n NYC will also create 16,000 volunteering opportunities annually by 2030 through its volunteering arm, Youth Corps Singapore.<\/p>\n Narasimman says long-term volunteering habits can help young people find their footing and support system.<\/p>\n He says: \u201cWhen young people join persistent, ground-up community networks, their mental well-being improves because they gain a stable social identity and a permanent community home.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Nathaniel Chan (bottom right), co-president of youth-led music education collective The Resonance Project with fellow volunteers of the group.<\/p>\n PHOTO: COURTESY OF NATHANIEL CHAN<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n Outside of school, helping others is how Secondary Four student Nathaniel Chan met several of his close friends.<\/p>\n The 16-year-old teaches kids how to play ukulele at a student care centre every Wednesday as part of The Resonance Project (Reso).<\/p>\n Reso is a youth-led and volunteer-run non-profit collective founded in 2021. It brings music education to underserved seniors and primary school pupils, providing music lessons at places like active ageing centres, student care centres and family service centres.<\/p>\n Chan joined in 2024 after attending one of Reso\u2019s outreach concerts. He has been one of two co-presidents of the group since July 2026. He considers many of his fellow volunteers his close friends.<\/p>\n Volunteer teams at each centre are fixed, he explains. \u201cYou do debriefs, planning calls and generally spend a lot of time with (the same people). Naturally, you\u2019ll get to meet and find people that way.\u201d<\/p>\n The Resonance Project\u2019s annual recital in November 2025 brought its beneficiaries from different centres together to perform for one another and showcase their musical progress.<\/p>\n PHOTO: COURTESY OF NATHANIEL CHAN<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n Nearly 80 per cent of youth surveyed by NYC say they want to do good and take action, but 43 per cent are unsure how to start.<\/p>\n \u201cI think for people who are a bit hesitant (about volunteering), my advice would be to bring a friend along,\u201d says Chan. \u201cIt\u2019s more comforting to go through the experience with someone you already know.\u201d<\/p>\n What keeps them going once they start? Young people value genuine contribution, says Narasimman, but they tend to become disengaged if they feel their involvement in a cause is tokenistic.<\/p>\n \u201cYouth derive a sense of purpose only when they possess authentic agency; the knowledge that their choices directly shape real-world outcomes,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n It is this sense of agency that has kept Chan active in Reso, an entirely youth-run project. It currently has more than 350 active volunteers, most of whom are aged 12 to 18.<\/p>\n \u201cThe fact that everything is run by us \u2013 that gives us a lot of ownership, in the sense that we know we\u2019re the ones making real impact,\u201d says Chan.<\/p>\n Like Chan, volunteering is a part of Wee\u2019s life. The competitive Scrabble player \u2013 ranked third in Singapore \u2013 helps to run Scrabble workshops, sessions and tournaments for community centres as a member of Singapore\u2019s Scrabble Association since 2014.<\/p>\n \u201cIf they need someone to liaise with participants during a tournament, or they need a slightly better player to show new players the ropes, I volunteer to teach people,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n Competitive Scrabble has not only earned Ryan Wee (above) tournament titles, but also a diverse group of friends he says he would not have found otherwise.<\/p>\n PHOTO: COURTESY OF RYAN WEE<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n Competitive Scrabble has not only earned Wee tournament titles, but also a diverse group of friends he says he would not have found otherwise.<\/p>\n He met one of his close friends \u2013 a fellow player in his 50s \u2013 through Scrabble.
