SINGAPORE: Singapore\u2019s Ng Wei Jun is keen to enjoy a dream debut at the 17th Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at Te Arai Links\u2019 South Course in New Zealand from October 29-November 1, 2026.<\/p>\n
The 22-year-old Ng will be joined by an in-form Justin Kuk at the prestigious Championship, which was launched in 2009 by the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC), The R&A and the Masters Tournament to further develop amateur golf in the region.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s champion will receive an invitation to the 2027 Masters Tournament and an exemption into the 155th Open.<\/p>\n
From being a spectator at the Asia-Pacific Amateur when Singapore played host in 2018, Ng is now relishing the opportunity to compete for the most prestigious amateur title in the region, where Singapore\u2019s best finish was a fifth-place finish by James Leow in 2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am incredibly excited and honored to make my debut,\u201d said Ng, a university student pursuing a double degree in electrical engineering and data analytics.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship is the pinnacle of amateur golf in our region, and simply qualifying to be in this elite field is a huge milestone. I\u2019m looking forward to testing my game against the absolute best amateurs in Asia-Pacific and experiencing a world-class Championship environment. It\u2019s an opportunity to see where I stand and to learn from competing on such a massive stage.\u201d<\/p>\n
This year, he has enjoyed three top-five finishes, including a third-place finish in the Singapore National Amateur Championship. It has been a rewarding amateur journey for Ng since the days when he attended the Asia-Pacific Amateur as a fan when Singapore hosted the event in 2018.<\/p>\n
\u201cEver since my first experience back in 2018, competing and contending in this tournament has been a dream goal of mine,\u201d he said. \u201cEarning the right to represent Singapore means the world to me. It validates all the early mornings, the sacrifices and the hard work I\u2019ve put in alongside my coaches and the Singapore Golf Association. I want to go out there, give it my all and make Singapore proud.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 25-year-old Kuk will savour a third appearance at Te Arai Links, a stunning links-style venue that consistently ranks among the top 100 courses in the world and features 16 ocean-view holes overlooking the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n
He finished T33 on his debut in 2021 but missed the cut in Dubai last year. However, lifting a first international title at the Vietnam Amateur Open in July has injected a fresh dose of confidence as he prepares for the trip to New Zealand.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was definitely a big confidence boost,\u201d Kuk said of his Vietnamese breakthrough.<\/p>\n \u201cI had a difficult start to the year after suffering from appendicitis, which resulted in two surgeries and a month-long stay in hospital. I was out of competition for the first half of the year, so winning the Vietnam Amateur Open was a little unexpected, especially as it was my first overseas competition since recovering.<\/p>\n \u201cThe win gave me a lot of confidence that my game is heading in the right direction. More importantly, it showed that the work I\u2019ve been putting in during my recovery is starting to translate into my performances.
