{"id":82626,"date":"2026-09-06T10:04:04","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T02:04:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=82626"},"modified":"2026-09-06T10:04:04","modified_gmt":"2026-09-06T02:04:04","slug":"dinesh-vasu-dash-alex-yam-urge-compassion-for-sporeans-missing-in-nepal-and-loved-ones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=82626","title":{"rendered":"Dinesh Vasu Dash, Alex Yam urge compassion for S\u2019poreans missing in Nepal and loved ones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary article-summary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth Dinesh Vasu Dash and Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC MP Alex Yam have urged Singaporeans to show compassion for the victims of last week\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/south-asia\/nepal-flash-flood-washes-away-villages-project-sites-near-tibet-border?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">Nepal-Tibet disaster<\/span><\/a> and their loved ones and to unite in the face of the tragedy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Both also called out comments questioning whether the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/9-singaporeans-among-517-foreigners-out-of-contact-after-deadly-nepal-tibet-floods?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">nine Singaporeans reported missing<\/span><\/a> in the Aug 26 incident were \u201creally Singaporean\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a Facebook post on Aug 31, Yam called the glacial flood that struck the Himalayan border between Nepal and Tibet a \u201cterrible tragedy\u201d and listed the names of the Singaporeans who are still unaccounted for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">They are Estee Loeh, Ghosh Aditi, Ng Kit Kuen, Rajesvaran Ayyavoo, Rengarajan Prabu, Shalinny Deavy Elan Sozan, Shubakshi Rawla, Subramaniam Diraviam and Sumit Rawla.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Yam said that while scrolling through the online comments about the disaster, he found something else equally difficult to stomach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWhile families wait desperately for news of their loved ones, a loud minority of people apparently looked at the names and faces of those missing and decided that this was the moment to ask whether they were really Singaporean,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He added that some had said they hoped that people would remain stranded or die, while others had also questioned why the authorities should help these Singapore citizens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Yam said people can have arguments over immigration, citizenship policies and integration, but this was not the time and place for that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cNot now. Not over people who may have lost their lives, while their children and loved ones are waiting for news,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cYou do not have to know someone to have compassion for them. You do not have to share their ancestry to pray for their safety. And you certainly do not have to diminish someone else\u2019s Singaporeanness to prove your own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Some of the comments are not just racist but are downright heartless, Yam said, adding that \u201cwe can be better than this\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cMay we remember that before race, nationality or politics, there are frightened families hoping that someone they love comes home. And I pray we never become so angry with one another that we lose the ability to simply be human.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Dinesh, who is also Minister of State for Manpower, agreed, telling The Straits Times: \u201cAt a moment like this, our first response must be humanity. Every missing person is someone\u2019s parent, spouse, child, sibling or friend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cLet us be clear: Using a person\u2019s name, race or appearance to question whether that person is truly Singaporean is racism. It is wrong, and it must be called out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">More than 900 people have been killed and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/south-asia\/nepal-buries-dead-as-rescuers-seek-thousands-missing?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">nearly 5,000 are missing<\/span><\/a> after a glacier collapse unleashed a <!-- -->catastrophic <!-- -->mudslide across the Himalayas on Aug 26.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How the Nepal flood happened: Tracing its path of destruction\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1N8JgT0HwL8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singapore\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Aug 27 that it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/mfa-in-contact-with-families-of-sporeans-affected-by-nepal-floods-crisis-response-team-deployed?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">in touch with the families of Singaporeans affected by the flood<\/span><\/a>. The Singapore High Commission in New Delhi also deployed a crisis response team to Nepal to render consular assistance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Speaking to <!-- -->ST<!-- --> on Aug 31, Shalinny\u2019s husband, who wanted to be known only as Selvaganesh, 43, <!-- -->said<!-- --> he was disheartened to see the racist comments online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThere were comments that said \u2018good riddance\u2019. There was also one that said they\u2019d rather cry for Singaporeans who have since given up their citizenship because they were more \u2018pure\u2019 Singaporeans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI\u2019m glad our seven-year-old daughter doesn\u2019t have social media yet, so she doesn\u2019t have to see all these toxic comments,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Both Selvaganesh and Shalinny are third-generation Singaporeans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Shalinny, 40, has been working at the State Courts for more than a decade and has spent about 15 years in the public service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Selvaganesh has also been a public servant for close to 20 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He added that his wife has been active in the grassroots scene for several years, regularly contributing to society.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAnd yet, all some people think about is race,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cFor 60 years, Singaporeans have been reciting the pledge, regardless of race or religion. Yet, here we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Selvaganesh also noted how there have been fake images of his wife shared online, in posts questioning whether she was \u201creally Singaporean\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said he knew that those who are doing this and making such comments are the minority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThe reality is, even if I ask for them to stop, they won\u2019t, because they will have their own justifications,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAll I can say is I feel sad for them.
