Back in June 2026, the AMEX Platinum Charge<\/a> launched a new welcome offer<\/a> worth up to 100,000 miles.\u00a0<\/strong>Now, I love a 100,000 miles welcome offer as much as the next man, but there were two big problems.<\/p>\n

First, the welcome offer was split into two tranches<\/strong> \u2014 cardholders would only receive half upfront, with the second half disbursed in the 15th month, after<\/strong> paying the second year\u2019s annual fee. Second, the minimum spend was a hefty S$15,000, <\/strong>which given the card\u2019s poor earn rates, would entail significant opportunity cost.<\/p>\n

Well, American Express has partially backtracked on this by cutting the minimum spend to S$10,000,<\/strong> while keeping the number of miles the same. Unfortunately, the bonus continues to be split into two, and the tighter new customer definition\u00a0<\/a>\u2014 which excludes even supplementary cardholders \u2014\u00a0still applies.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an improvement, but not by much.<\/p>\n
