{"id":82138,"date":"2026-09-04T14:46:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T06:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=82138"},"modified":"2026-09-04T14:46:00","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T06:46:00","slug":"mom-arrests-four-people-for-employment-related-offences-over-phantom-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=82138","title":{"rendered":"MOM arrests four people for employment-related offences over \u2018phantom workers\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary article-summary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->Four people were arrested on Sept 2 by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) for suspected employment-related offences over \u201cphantom workers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The four, two company directors and two company staff from the construction sector, are being investigated for suspected offences such as making false declarations and collecting employment-related kickbacks, said the MOM in a press release on Sept 4.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The directors are alleged to have made fraudulent Central Provident Fund (CPF) contributions to locals who are not under their employment, or \u201cphantom workers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">By doing so, they can inflate the foreign worker quotas of their companies and thereafter bring in more migrant workers, said the MOM.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The ministry also said that another 21 individuals are assisting in the investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Making false declarations in work pass applications carries a fine of up to $20,000, a jail term of up to two years, or both.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Those convicted may also be barred from employing foreign workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">People who collude with companies by providing their particulars for fraudulent CPF contributions to inflate foreign worker quotas may also be prosecuted and punished with the same sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The collection of employment-related kickbacks is an offence punishable with a fine of up to $30,000, an imprisonment term of up to two years, or both.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The MOM <!-- -->reminds<!-- --> the public not to accept CPF contributions from businesses they are not working for, as they may be guilty of aiding in false declaration offences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Anyone who is aware of such activities should report them to the MOM\u2019s eService under \u201cReport an infringement\u201d, added the ministry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<center><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/mom-arrests-four-people-for-employment-related-offences-over-phantom-workers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read Full Article At Source <\/a><br \/>\n<center\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SINGAPORE \u2013 Four people were arrested on Sept 2 by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) for suspected employment-related offences over \u201cphantom workers\u201d.
