{"id":82082,"date":"2026-09-04T09:56:59","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T01:56:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=82082"},"modified":"2026-09-04T09:56:59","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T01:56:59","slug":"haze-in-spore-psi-tops-100-in-central-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=82082","title":{"rendered":"Haze in S\u2019pore: PSI tops 100 in central region"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary article-summary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 The 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) in Singapore exceeded 101 on the morning of Sept 4, with air quality entering the unhealthy range.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At 9am, the 24-hour\u00a0PSI in the central part of the island was 104, according to the National Environment Agency\u00a0(NEA) website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">I<!-- -->t first hit 101 in central Singapore at 7am, before climbing further to 103 at 8am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Air quality is considered\u00a0unhealthy\u00a0when\u00a0the PSI\u00a0is in the range of 101 to 200, during which NEA advises the public to cut down on outdoor activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The last time the PSI hit unhealthy levels due to haze was in October 2023.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"responsive-iframe-base st_visuals st_visuals-embed\" title=\"st_visuals embed\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/multimedia\/graphics\/2026\/08\/singapore-haze-widget\/index.html\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"accelerometer;falseclipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\" loading=\"eager\" data-testid=\"responsiveIframe\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This time around, the 24-hour PSI started inching towards the unhealthy range early on Sept 4.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At 1am, the PSI was between 70 and 90, within the moderate range, with the highest reading of 90 recorded in central Singapore. Dense smoke haze was observed over southern and central Sumatra and various parts of Kalimantan on most days from around Aug 21.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This follows weeks of forest and land fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan in Indonesia, fuelled by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/what-is-a-godzilla-el-nino-and-how-could-it-affect-singapore?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">a super El Nino weather phenomenon<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">How badly Singapore is affected depends on wind direction.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Why this year\u2019s haze in Singapore could be as bad as 2015\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NzYyUPVfVQM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; Both measures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/st-explains-psi-or-pm2-5-what-air-quality-measures-should-i-refer-to-during-the-haze?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">serve different functions<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">During periods of haze, the 24-hour PSI forecast and corresponding health advisories should be used to plan outdoor activities for the next day, said the NEA website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The one-hour PM2.5 should be referred to when deciding on immediate outdoor activities, for example, going for a jog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The 24-hour PSI is computed based on the daily average concentration<b> <\/b>of six pollutants, including PM2.5, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and ozone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The calculations are done based on readings from the past 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM2.5 refers to micro-pollutants found in smoke haze from forest fires.
