{"id":82022,"date":"2026-09-04T05:15:58","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T21:15:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=82022"},"modified":"2026-09-04T05:15:58","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T21:15:58","slug":"honor-among-thieves-directors-say-film-flopped-due-to-not-so-great-timing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=82022","title":{"rendered":"Honor Among Thieves Directors Say Film Flopped Due to &#8216;Not-So-Great&#8217; Timing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">The directors of Dungeons &amp; Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, admitted the fantasy flick flopped due to \u201cnot-so-great timing\u201d because of The Super Mario Bros. movie and drama with Wizards of the Coast\u2019s proposed D&amp;D licensing changes.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><u>Dungeons &amp; Dragons: Honor Among Thieves<\/u> released in March 2023, right around the time that Wizards of the Coast was <u>facing massive backlash<\/u> from players after confirming planned adjustments to their Open-Gaming License that would have made sweeping changes to rules that allowed creators to make and sell their own content based on the tabletop RPG\u2019s fifth edition.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">While they ultimately ended up <u>walking this disastrous decision back<\/u>, the blowback was enough to negatively impact the movie adaptation, says director John Francis Daley. He claims that this drama, alongside the hugely-successful launch of <u>The Super Mario Bros. It came out a month after Wizards of the Coast changed the official gaming license, prompting many D&amp;D fans to boycott the game, and I don\u2019t think the marketing did enough to tell people who weren\u2019t already fans that this movie might be for them. Yeah, so it was a perfect storm of all of those elements, and we\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Honor Among Thieves struggled at the box office, and Paramount has since passed up on making a sequel due to \u201cfinancial\u201d reasons. But Daley and Goldstein are hopeful that another studio will pick them up to continue telling stories in the Dungeons &amp; Dragons universe.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cYeah, absolutely,\u201d Goldstein confirmed after being asked if anyone is actively crunching the numbers for a possible sequel. \u201cI think Hasbro is a big believer in it, and if they can figure out a studio partner to make it work, they\u2019ll want to proceed. As are our producers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><output class=\"box-wrapper jsx-2673806401\" data-cy=\"article-video\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201cI mean, look, it\u2019s something that is near and dear to our hearts in that we loved making the first one,\u201d Daley added. \u201cWe fell in love with the characters, and there\u2019s so much potential in a sequel because the first act isn\u2019t filled with exposition or introduction to this family that we\u2019ve already become accustomed to. So you can kind of launch right into the story, which is really nice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Fans shouldn\u2019t despair; while an Honor Among Thieves sequel is still up in the air, a live-action TV series is officially in the works at Netflix, based on the TTRPG\u2019s gothic-horror world \u201cRavenloft.\u201d Described as a \u201cprestige fantasy series where adventure collides with gothic horror and tragic romance,\u201d it follows \u201cthe making of the vampire Darklord Strahd von Zarovic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Even better, a new third-person action-adventure game titled Dungeons &amp; Dragons: Warlock is also in development, set to release sometime in 2027.<\/p>\n<p><span data-cy=\"poll-view-trigger\"><\/p>\n<section class=\"box-wrapper jsx-2673806401\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><em>Virginia (she\/her) is IGN\u2019s News Editor.
