Set in a seedy 1960s world of smoky pubs and grimy snooker halls, where deals are done on napkins, Danny Boyle\u2019s Ink<\/em> is a stark reminder of how British media changed forever with the creation of The Sun.<\/p>\n

Opening this year\u2019s Venice International Film Festival<\/span>, this latest venture from Slumdog Millionaire<\/em> director Boyle comes adapted by James Graham from his own play. Not that you would know it; there is nothing theatrical about Boyle\u2019s staging here.<\/div>\n
Initially taking centre stage in Boyle\u2019s film is prickly entrepreneur Rupert Murdoch<\/span> (Guy Pearce, playing him with good grace), who buys the ailing paper from the Mirror Group back when it had no real identity.<\/div>\n

In comes editor Larry Lamb (Jack O\u2019Connell), a former hack at the highly successful Daily Mirror, who \u2013 under Murdoch\u2019s instructions \u2013 creates a newspaper designed to appeal to ordinary, working-class men and women.<\/p>\n

Typically, characters are introduced with on-screen titles carrying their names \u2013 a trick Boyle previously pulled off in his landmark Irvine Welsh adaptation Trainspotting<\/em> (1996), which shares a similar energy to Ink<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
