{"id":81781,"date":"2026-09-03T10:35:51","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T02:35:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=81781"},"modified":"2026-09-03T10:35:51","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T02:35:51","slug":"new-childcare-leave-scheme-will-take-some-time-to-implement-at-least-several-months-indranee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=81781","title":{"rendered":"New childcare leave scheme will take some time to implement, at least several months: Indranee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary article-summary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->Implementing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/ndr-2026-working-parents-to-get-8-to-12-days-of-childcare-leave-a-year-for-kids-aged-12-and-below?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">new childcare leave provisions for parents announced at the National Day Rally (NDR)<\/span><\/a> will take at least several months, as the Government works through operational details and makes the necessary legislative and system changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Minister in the Prime Minister\u2019s Office Indranee Rajah said on Sept 2 that there is no start date yet for the revamped scheme, which gives each working parent up to 12 days of childcare leave <!-- -->a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The Government will also reimburse employers for the full duration of all child-related leave schemes, such as maternity leave and childcare leave, up to a limit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI know that everybody would like to start, like, yesterday, but remember that when it was announced at NDR, PM said this is a sneak preview, right?\u201d she said on Sept 2 during an interview with CNA938.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Before implementation, the Government has to<!-- --> <!-- -->work out operational issues with tripartite partners like employers, unions and parents to make sure all the details are tied down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Legislation also needs to be amended because childcare leave is currently provided for as part of the Child Development Co-Savings Act, Indranee said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Information technology systems must also be looked at<!-- --> \u2013 <!-- -->the Government has to track who uses childcare leave to make sure they are paid, and that their employers are reimbursed the correct amount to pay workers covering the duties of the parents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSo I think that will take some time. It\u2019s going to take at least several months. I can\u2019t give you a date as to when it will start. I can say that these are the things that have to take place first, and we will announce the start date as soon as we can,\u201d<!-- --> <!-- -->Indranee said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Prime Minister Lawrence Wong had said at the NDR on Aug 23<!-- --> <!-- -->that the new scheme will give a working parent with one child aged 12 and below eight days of childcare leave a year. The entitlement falls to two days of extended childcare leave when the youngest child is aged seven to 12.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">During his NDR speech, PM Wong also announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/ndr-2026-each-sporean-child-to-get-almost-70000-from-birth-to-age-17?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">new Child Support Package that will provide almost $70,000 in government support<\/span><\/a> for Singaporean children from birth throughout their growing years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When asked how the Government arrived at that figure, Indranee explained that the figure comprises the new SG Child Support Package, worth up to $62,000, as well as existing benefits such as the $5,000 MediSave Grant for Newborns and Edusave contributions during primary and secondary school.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Will more money and leave encourage Singaporeans to have babies?
