A man involved in a dispute with a drinks stall owner at a Sembawang coffee shop has shared his account of the incident after a video of their altercation went viral online.<\/p>\n
In a statement shared on Reddit on Tuesday (Sep 1), the man, who identified himself as Brandon, said he was at a coffee shop with his parents at around 7.30pm on Aug 30 for dinner when the incident occurred.<\/p>\n
Brandon said the coffee shop was crowded, but his family managed to find an unoccupied table. He placed a water bottle on the table before he went to the toilet.<\/p>\n
While he was away, the drinks stall owner allegedly approached his father and told him that the water bottle could not be placed on the table and had to be kept on a chair instead.<\/p>\n
“I questioned the reason for this, especially since there was sufficient space on the table and my mum was still queuing to purchase food,” said Brandon.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“I also found it unusual that a water bottle could not be placed on an otherwise empty table.”<\/p>\n
According to Brandon, the drinks stall owner said it was a coffee shop rule that outside drinks and water bottles were not allowed on tables.<\/p>\n
The situation then escalated, with Brandon alleging that the drinks stall owner left his stall and threw the water bottle onto the pathway outside the coffee shop twice.<\/p>\n
A video of the dispute shared on social media shows a man clad in a red shirt placing a water bottle on the table, while another younger man can be seen recording the dispute.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In the background, a man can be heard speaking in Mandarin, saying that the bottle would be removed if it was placed on the table.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Brandon also alleged that the drinks stall owner challenged his father to a fight in a “back alley” during the dispute.<\/p>\n
“My dad refused and said if there was an issue, it should be addressed openly rather than taking it somewhere secluded,” said Brandon.<\/p>\n
“I do not believe that this is an appropriate way for a vendor to handle a disagreement with customers.”<\/p>\n
Brandon added that he had also recorded the events from his side but was unable to disclose or share the footage as the matter is currently under police investigation.<\/p>\n
Responding to queries from AsiaOne, the police confirmed that a report had been lodged.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In his statement, Brandon acknowledged that his father used harsh words during the argument, but said these came after the situation had already escalated.<\/p>\n
“I believe it is important that the events leading up to those words are also considered rather than viewing the circulated video in isolation,” he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
