class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Chew Soon Hoe, deputy head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at NUS\u2019 College of Design and Engineering, said the undersea stretch of the MCE could be constructed at a relatively shallow depth as there is no vessel traffic passing over it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He added that the seabed at the MCE site has a more uniform soil profile than the channel between Changi and Tekong, which made \u201ccut and cover\u201d the optimal solution, as it could be carried out after the seabed was strengthened by deep cement mixing \u2013 a process that involves mixing cement with on-site soil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This \u201ccut and cover\u201d solution, he said, is unlikely to be used for the mainland-Tekong tunnels as they will need to be longer and constructed deeper below the seabed, and as vessel movement will be impacted during the class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Chew added that soil conditions in the Changi-Tekong area are more complex than at the MCE site, which makes deep cement mixing to stabilise the worksite more challenging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Based on satellite images, the sea between Changi and Pulau Tekong spans at least about 1.5km.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"font-primary-headline-md-semibold\" data-testid=\"article-subhead-test-id\">How might the tunnels be constructed?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Engineers said that broadly, two construction methods can be used \u2013 tunnel boring or an immersed tunnel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">David Ng, chairman of the Civil and Structural Engineering Technical Committee at the Institution of Engineers, Singapore, said tunnel boring involves launching a machine from a shaft on land, which will bore through rock or stiff clay roughly 15m to 30m beneath the sea floor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For the immersed tunnel process, he said concrete tunnel elements will be constructed on dry land, before being brought out to sea to be connected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">These precast tunnels will be placed in a trench that will have to be dredged on the seabed. Clay is sticky but water will not flow too quickly around it.
