This, in turn, reduces the severity of accidents, TP pointed out.

To strengthen is speed enforcement capabilities on the expressways, TP announced in its report that progressive testing and calibration of the new Expressway Average Speed Enforcement System (EASE) has begun, starting with the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE).

The system uses police cameras at the entry and exit of a defined enforcement zone on the expressway to detect and compute the average speed of a vehicle based on the distance travelled and time taken.

Vehicles that exceed the stipulated average speed limit will be flagged for speeding violations, but no summons will be issued during the ongoing trials, TP said, adding that further details on the system will be provided when it is ready for implementation.

The use of average speed for enforcement is not new.

Along a stretch of Tanah Merah Coast Road, average speed cameras have been deployed since 2018.

Speeding offences are determined based on a similar formula of distance over time, which computes the corresponding average speed to determine if a vehicle has committed a speeding offence.

[[nid:743755]]

Other measures to deter speeding

Since the first half of 2026, TP has introduced the new Traffic Violation Enforcement Cameras (TVECs).

In a written reply to a parliamentary question by Pasir Ris-Changi GRC MP Valerie Lee on April 7, Senior Minister, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs K Shanmugam said that nine TVECs have been deployed on public roads since March.

He added in his reply then that TP is also developing plans to increase the number of such cameras.

On Jan 1, enhanced penalties for speeding offences also came into effect.

Other upcoming measures include the tightening of the Driver Improvement Points System, phased implementation of <a
