A snake was seen slithering about outside a glass enclosure in Mandai’s RepTopia, according to a video uploaded to Instagram by user Azulesoctopus on Monday (Aug 24).<\/p>\n
In the video, the snake, a painted bronzeback, is seen moving across a rocky structure connected to the glass enclosure, surrounded by guests.<\/p>\n
One of two staff members next to it then reaches down, holding the snake’s tail with a gloved right hand while wrangling its body with her left.<\/p>\n
Once secured, the snake is then escorted away as the video ends.<\/p>\n
Reacting to the sight, Azulesoctopus shared that they were just about to step into the reptile exhibition, but overheard a visitor informing staff of the situation.<\/p>\n
“My heart skipped a beat,” they laughed.<\/p>\n
Mandai Wildlife Group told AsiaOne that the incident took place on Sunday (Aug 23) and that staff immediately arrived after the visitor alerted them to the snake outside the exhibit.<\/p>\n
“Snakes are generally harmless if left undisturbed and will typically move away on their own when given room,” the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
Because this particular snake was small and moving fast, potentially capable of injuring itself in the crowded environment, staff followed protocol to step in and assist the animal, which appeared unable to retreat on its own.<\/p>\n
The reptile was subsequently released back into the wild, the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
Members of the public are advised to contact the Animal and Veterinary Service’s (AVS) Animal Response Centre at 1800-476-1600 should they come across snakes in the wild.<\/p>\n
Professionals trained in handling and caring for wildlife will be dispatched to assist.<\/p>\n
The AVS also advised the public to avoid handling snakes themselves as this may cause stress on injury to the animal, and the snake may also bite in self-defence.<\/p>\n
“Stay calm and do not be alarmed,” the advisory states. “Back away slowly to give the snake space to retreat.<\/p>\n
“These animals are shy and will not attack humans unless provoked or cornered. Sudden movements may alarm the snake and cause it to attack in self-defence.”<\/p>\n
