Watching the Grand Theft Auto 6<\/em> <\/em>Extended Look, I wondered if the reason Rockstar Games went with Netflix as the launch platform for its mega-trailer was much simpler and more boring than we all expected. I wondered if it came down to video encoding.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/section>\n <\/p>\n The video looks so much better on Netflix than it does on YouTube. Go check them out and do a side-by-side comparison. The blacks are deeper, the colors pop more, the lines are cleaner, there’s less artefacting, details like the face of a character in the background are better resolved. It’s far from perfect, but when it comes to streaming video quality, Netflix is definitely one of the better platforms: not far off Apple, and way ahead of Prime Video and YouTube.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n I’m sure there were many other enticements for Rockstar to enter this marketing partnership. (Maybe even financial ones; the video is certainly a coup for Netflix, and has shot into its Top 10 and number one.) But I bet this detail wasn’t lost on the studio. Rockstar cares deeply about how its games are presented, and Netflix offers a much more attractive shop window.<\/p>\n It’s not like you couldn’t watch the Extended Look on your phone over shitty wifi during its window of Netflix exclusivity. But maybe you didn’t. Maybe you used the Netflix app on your smart TV (or your console) and enjoyed it on the screen you’ll be playing GTA 6<\/em> on in a few months time. Maybe you watched it with friends. I think this is what Rockstar had in mind.<\/p>\n This doesn’t mean it’s not hubris to give a trailer, even a glorified one, a timed exclusivity window on a subscription service. It absolutely is. But, if you expand this line of thinking beyond streaming video tech, I think the way the Extended Look was rolled out \u2014 as well as its content, of course \u2014 can tell you a lot about how Rockstar views itself and its game.<\/p>\n It is surely no accident that GTA 6 <\/em>got its big gameplay debut on a platform that might be the world’s number-one way to watch movies. Rockstar’s games have always drawn deeply from cinematic language, iconography, and technique. This is the studio that made a game of The Warriors<\/em> and tried to sublimate the effortless cool and hard edge of William Friedkin’s To Live and Die in L.A. <\/em>(or Clint Eastwood’s The Outlaw Josey Wales<\/em>) into a new medium.<\/p>\n GTA 6 <\/em>looks perfectly at home among Netflix’s movie catalog; honestly, it outclasses a lot of it. The astonishing visual richness of the world it conjures \u2014 the bustling locations, the cast of thousands \u2014 is probably the envy of most modern filmmakers this side of Christopher Nolan (especially those working on straight-to-streaming budgets). You can see why Rockstar thought its latest project was deserving of a bigger canvas \u2014 and why the studio might have wanted to give Jason and Lucia more than three minutes. The pair might be cartoonishly hot, but they seem much more subtly drawn and generally low-key than GTA 5<\/em>‘s dastardly trio.<\/p>\n But, while Rockstar might be one of the high priests of video games’ movie worship, the studio doesn’t share in the inferiority complex that often goes hand-in-hand with it \u2014 at least not anymore. While you might be impressed by GTA 6<\/em>‘s cinematic visuals, you also wouldn’t mistake it for anything other than a video game.<\/p>\n The Extended Look is surprisingly comfortable with showing game mechanics without signposting or commentary, and with scrambled, asynchronous cross-cutting between gameplay, cutscene, and montage. There\u2019s no narrator giving an overview of plot points or in-game systems. Instead, you\u2019re trusted to follow along. The story, too, seems to sprawl out in multiple directions at once, while threading the details of a bigger-picture narrative \u2014 Jason and Lucia’s relationship, whatever their “problem” is \u2014 into the stitching. That’s how storytelling in video games works!<\/p>\n In the Extended Look, GTA 6<\/em> looks both utterly spectacular and quite ordinary. It’s a GTA game: you steal cars, shoot people, meet disreputable characters. Rockstar isn’t seeking to redefine expectations of the biggest game franchise in the world, and why should it? But, through the way the Extended Look has been made and released, Rockstar does seem to be seeking to put GTA in a new context. The Extended Look is about scarcity (this is the first new GTA in 13 years, after all), about engineering a moment, about removing GTA from the world of video games entirely \u2014 though it doesn’t necessarily disavow that world.<\/p>\n Is that hubris or confidence?
