SINGAPORE: A man who fled from Singapore to Malaysia in 2021 was on Thursday (Aug 27) handed a jail sentence for a brawl he was involved in five years earlier.<\/p>\n
Marcus Yeo Zhen Wei had escaped the authorities by first travelling to Pulau Ubin, before making his way into Malaysia in October 2021.<\/p>\n
But he was caught by there the following year over a drug-related offence.<\/p>\n
The 35-year-old was eventually sent back to Singapore in November 2025 before his re-arrest for the brawl that occurred at a Magazine Road club near Havelock Road.<\/p>\n
Yeo was sentenced to two years and three weeks\u2019 jail, after he pleaded guilty to offences including assault, performing a rash act, and illegally departing Singapore.<\/p>\n
The incident happened at around 9.30pm on March 21, 2021 when Yeo and three male friends, who had consumed alcohol, confronted several patrons after accusing them of staring.<\/p>\n
Yeo and his friends flung items including glasses and bottles at the patrons before the club\u2019s bouncers got the four of them to leave the premises.<\/p>\n
Instead of leaving, one of Yeo\u2019s friends retrieved a baton from a car and returned to the entrance of the club. Another member of Yeo\u2019s entourage then armed himself with a knife.<\/p>\n
They then attacked two Vietnamese men leaving the club and one of Yeo\u2019s friends used the baton to hit them. One of the victims was hit repeatedly.<\/p>\n
Deputy Public Prosecutor Mark Chia told the court that the 30-year-old managed to get away, but doctors at the Singapore General Hospital found he had sustained injuries including a collapsed lung.<\/p>\n
He was given 21 days of medical leave.<\/p>\n
Yeo was arrested on March 26, 2021 and kept in custody for six days. He was slated to appear in court in November that year, but while out on bail, he decided to leave Singapore illegally.<\/p>\n
Immigration and Checkpoints Authority prosecutor Deputy Superintendent (DSP) Wong Wai Yuen told the court that Yeo went to Pulau Ubin in October 2021 and took a boat to Malaysia.<\/p>\n
Without revealing details, the DSP said that Malaysian authorities later caught him for a drug-related offence in 2022, and he was sent back to Singapore in November 2025.<\/p>\n
