The Super NES had no shortage of amazing RPGs, though only a fraction of them saw release outside of Japan. There was one particularly strange case, though: Terranigma, the third game in a trilogy of popular action-RPGs that included Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia, only saw an English-language release in Europe. 30 years later, however, that’s finally changing, as Terranigma has been announced for a global release by publisher Clear River Games on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2, and PC in early 2027.<\/p>\n

Terranigma puts players in the shoes of Ark, a youth who lives in a secluded village. A mysterious box he opens unleashes a curse on everyone in his hamlet, setting him off on a journey that becomes an epoch-crossing mission to revive the world and humanity as we know it. As a late SNES release, it offers some of the finest pixel-art graphics and music seen on the platform, along with an ambitious narrative and visual design supervised by manga creator Kamui Fujiwara.<\/p>\n

While any sort of changes and additions to the game were not explicitly detailed, the re-release appears to be faithful to the original’s pixel art and music. The press release announcing the game mentions “bringing a host of upgrades, tweaks and bonus features” — hopefully that means one the game’s most notorious difficulty spikes might be toned down.<\/p>\n

Terranigma was originally created by now-defunct developer Quintet and published by Enix. While an English translation was commissioned, Enix’s US subsidiary had closed by the time the game was set to release. Nintendo of Europe picked up the game for publishing in that region–even localizing it into additional languages–but it was passed over by Nintendo of America, resulting in an unusual case of a SNES RPG being released in Europe and Japan, but not North America. It’s since become one of the most sought-after European SNES releases. <\/p>\n

Due to Enix’s merger with Square and Quintet’s dissolution, some (including former staff) assumed that rights issues were holding up a potential re-release. It appears that any such issues have been resolved, as Clear River states that Terranigma is being re-released “in cooperation with Square-Enix.” While we’ll probably never know what sort of wrangling went on behind the scenes, it’s cause for celebration that such a underappreciated classic of a game will finally get the worldwide release it deserves.<\/p>\n
