Both games turn a single mind into a cast of competing voices arguing over the best way to handle one weighty conversation. Land on the right persona for a particular chat, and a person will open up and tell you something useful. Land on the wrong one, and you’ll see people flinch, throw you a curveball, or simply wait for you to try again. As you extract more and more memories, you’ll unlock new personas (such as, say, “mysterious,” “killer,” and “…cat”), each of which can change what you look like, in addition to what you’re capable of communicating.

The game’s story will take you through three areas. In Lotown, you’ll meet a musician named Lydia who’s lost track of why she makes music, and GoodBoy, a cultist who’s unmoored with the sudden lack of a god to follow. In Pipelines, you’ll meet Ruth, a self-loathing artist; and, once you get to Hitown, you’ll meet Nightman, a conspiracy theorist full of shame that he’s left his daughter in pursuit of his delusions. It feels closer to walking through someone else’s dream than navigating a real world. The aesthetic leans into that jittery, off-kilter feeling: The world’s built from flat, hand-drawn shapes arranged into rooms and squiggly streets that don’t sit still. It can feel grimy and cozy and sterile at the same time. The game brings you back to familiar places but changes just enough details that you’re questioning if you’ve really been there before.

By the time you reach Hitown, you’ll have collected enough personas to choose from 20 different options during each conversation, which can further disorient and overwhelm you. This can be a lot to deal with — and, since getting a response wrong doesn’t really cost anything, you’ll find yourself cycling through options to find something that finally clicks. But none of that undoes the heartwrenching, disorienting work at the heart of the game, which is asking you to sit with characters at their worst and figure out, through trial and error and an odd version of empathy, what it is that they need to hear. If you’re the type of person who finds yourself rehashing difficult conversations long after they’ve ended, in games or out of them, this is the kind of game that will absorb an entire afternoon and, likely, stick with you for years after. Just don’t be surprised if you catch yourself, weeks from now, wondering what a tuba for a torso would’ve done for that one conversation you never quite got right.

Burden Street Station is available to play on PC via Steam.

                    Related

Disco Elysium studio’s new spy RPG is an ode to career screw-ups

ZA/UM’s engrossing Zero Parades blurs the line between betrayal and survival

Somewhere in the afterlife, there’s a card catalog full of sentient books.
