One intrepid game dev recently decided to do build an entire game bringing that metaphor to life. The developer, Nas Nakarus, kept the concept simple when debuting the game in a recent post on X: “I made a game where you literally have to find a needle in a haystack — the catch is there are 5,000,000 pieces of hay and only 1 needle.” The reception to his pitch has been wildly enthusiastic. Over a weekend, the post received over 23 million views, nearly 200,000 likes, tens of thousands of reposts — and a comment section filled with both enthusiasm and questions. A fairly big reaction for a game that has neither a real title nor a Steam page (Nakarus says that’s coming next week) nor a timeline nor much of anything, really…except for the promise of endless hours of sorting through slivers of hay.

Which, itself, raises further questions. For example: Why is this the game that’s got all of us talking, when there are other gigantic games being released or hyped right now? And, obviously, the question on everyone’s mind: Has the developer found the needle yet? We’ve got an answer to that last one: When asked about finding the needle himself via replies on X, Nas said, “Not yet. Something tells me it’s gonna take a while.”

Some are calling this game a prime example of “sort slop.” Sometimes this is a kind description. Sometimes it’s not. This untitled needle-haystack game is part of a wave of sorting and organizing games that ask players to complete slow, repetitive, and borderline pointless tasks for their own sake, which can feel meditative or even ASMR-y. These types of games — chore sims like Unpacking and PowerWash Simulator — have spawned a dedicated fan base. But finding a needle in a haystack, especially if that is the main gist of the game, does take that repetition to another level. Commenters on X are requesting ways to turn the task into slightly more of a game, perhaps through a full tool progression (e.g., first sorting by hand, then shovel, then leaf blower, then metal detector). Others are pushing for it to be a co-op game, which would place this upcoming title squarely into the “friendslop” bucket — perfect for aimless clicking while hanging out. Still others are predicting everyone’s future with this game, saying, “Can’t wait to spend 70 hours on this, then watch a 12-year-old find it in 14 seconds using a Guitar Hero controller.”

This game concept has landed at an odd moment for the gaming community’s attention span. Over the last several days, tons of early GTA 6 gameplay footage has been leaked online. The internet at large spent days breaking down individual frames, from gas station signage to basketball animations. Grand Theft Auto 6 is one of the most detailed, densely constructed games ever made, and suddenly, we’re all now talking about a haystack with no hidden symbolism or story, only an invite to sift and stare. Perhaps the appeal isn’t actually that different: both games feed into the human urge to stare at something enormous until it gives us what we’re looking for. GTA 6 rewards that urge with painstaking attention to detail. This game, it seems, will just reward us with more hay.

                    Related

GTA 6 gets another gameplay leak ahead of Netflix’s official reveal

New footage of Grand Theft Auto 6 by a hacking group shows some impressive details

“Finding a needle in a haystack” is one of those sayings you use without ever picturing the literal haystack.
