Harnessing their strong sense of smell, dung beetles are particularly drawn to human waste.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Each trap was left in the field for 24\u2009hours before the researchers returned to collect the beetles. But their guts are full from what they\u2019ve been eating previously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Their stomachs would contain a mush of mammal and avian DNA that the scientists sought to identify.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ong said: \u201cThe main objective of this study was to draw the interactions between the dung beetles and the types of vertebrate or mammal dung they were feeding on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">More than 540 dung beetles belonging to 14 species were trapped over two months, with the contents of their guts analysed in the lab.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"landscape inline-media-wrapper\" science.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">After dissecting the beetles, Ong and her team separated the half-digested materials from their stomachs and transferred them inside solutions that amplify the <!-- -->DNA<!-- --> of mammals and vertebrates<!-- --> such as birds and frogs<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<figure data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The samples were sent to a company that sequenced or mapped the DNA found in the beetles\u2019 guts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">A total of 18<!-- --> animal species<!-- --> were detected through DNA matching, including the elusive sambar deer, Sunda pangolin and Sunda slow loris. You would think dung beetles would feed on the (waste of) a python or a monitor lizard, not a frog. But there are species of dung beetles that feed on carcasses, or the beetle could have fed on something that ate a frog.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">She highlighted how the study can also map food webs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The research findings were published in scientific journal Molecular Ecology Resources.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">While the Central Catchment Nature Reserve is known to be rich in biodiversity, the study was exciting for the NTU researchers because they demonstrated that dung beetles can be used as a DNA resource for surveying wildlife in tropical forests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">While such biodiversity surveys are commonly done through camera traps, the cameras are usually placed on the forest floor, which might miss wildlife residing in the canopy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It may also be difficult to identify the specific species of forest rodents through a camera, and having specific DNA sequences helps, noted Ong<!-- -->, who is also a researcher at the NUS Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Beyond just documenting the types of animals in the forest, the researchers were also able to map the interactions between dung beetles and animals across the forest sites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Slade said: \u201cWhat happens if you lose some species? Is the resilience in there? The next step in ecological research, for conservation, is to look just beyond counting species to actually looking at how they interact, and that\u2019s not been done a lot in the tropics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">These efforts can help to measure the ecological value of a forested area that is planned for development, or track how a degraded forest is improving through conservation projects, she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Moving forward, the team is looking to test another way of extracting mammals\u2019 DNA from dung beetles without dissecting them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">They plan to swab the beetles\u2019 surfaces, such as the mouths and bodies, which potentially contain traces of wildlife DNA, before sending the swabs for DNA analysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ash Welch, a nature-based solutions and biodiversity specialist at infrastructure consultancy AECOM, said the NTU research shows the effectiveness of emerging sampling techniques, giving consultants the grounding to adopt them alongside traditional survey methods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In environmental assessments, what tends to be lacking is an in-depth understanding of ecological networks and the interactions that occur within an ecosystem, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Knowing about these is important, he said, because ecosystems can provide benefits such as urban cooling against heat and soak up<!-- --> planet-warming<!-- --> greenhouse gases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThat matters because a species list tells you only what is present.
