SINGAPORE \u2013 A hotel guest was taken to hospital after a fire broke out at York Hotel Singapore near Orchard Road on the morning of Aug 24.<\/p>\n
In response to queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at 21 Mount Elizabeth, which is the address of the hotel, at about 4am that day.<\/p>\n
The fire involved contents of a kitchen on the second floor of the building, SCDF said, adding that the fire was put out with a fire extinguisher.<\/p>\n
One person was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.<\/p>\n
The cause of the fire is under investigation.<\/p>\n
A video of the incident uploaded to Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu shows the hotel lobby shrouded in a thin veil of smoke.<\/p>\n
A fire truck is seen parked outside the hotel, while police and SCDF personnel attend to the incident.<\/p>\n
Dozens of people who appear to be hotel guests are also seen standing outside the hotel.<\/p>\n
In a statement on Aug 24, Joyce Yao, York Hotel Singapore\u2019s director of marketing communications, said a small fire broke out in a food preparation area in the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant.<\/p>\n
The restaurant is operated by a tenant, and is located on the second floor of the hotel\u2019s Tower Block.<\/p>\n
The hotel\u2019s fire alarm system was activated at 4.04am, and the police and SCDF were immediately alerted, Yao said.<\/p>\n
She said the SCDF arrived at 4.12am, and the fire was extinguished at about 4.20am.<\/p>\n
The fire was confined to the food preparation area, which was unoccupied at the time of the incident.<\/p>\n
During the evacuation, a guest suffered an ankle injury on the ground floor, and was taken to hospital for medical attention, Yao said.<\/p>\n
The guest was discharged from the hospital at about 6.30am.<\/p>\n
Since then, York Hotel Singapore has been in contact with the guest to provide the necessary assistance, Yao added.<\/p>\n
After mandatory safety checks by the police and SCDF, guests were allowed to return to their rooms between 5.30am and 6.15am, Yao said.<\/p>\n
The area affected by the fire remains closed while investigations are ongoing.<\/p>\n
Operations at the Chinese restaurant have also been suspended until further notice.<\/p>\n
There is no impact to the hotel\u2019s overall operations, Yao said, adding that the establishment is cooperating fully with the authorities in their investigations.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe sincerely apologise to our guests for the disruption and inconvenience caused by the incident and evacuation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe safety and well-being of our guests and staff remain our highest priority, and we will continue to provide all necessary assistance,\u201d Yao said.<\/p>\n
