{"id":79145,"date":"2026-08-24T17:19:03","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T09:19:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=79145"},"modified":"2026-08-24T17:19:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T09:19:03","slug":"singapore-ecuador-ink-deal-to-cooperate-in-human-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=79145","title":{"rendered":"Singapore, Ecuador ink deal to cooperate in human development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 Singapore and Ecuador have signed an agreement on development cooperation on Aug 24, during Ecuador President Daniel Noboa Azin\u2019s state visit to Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The memorandum of understanding will deepen capacity building and the exchange of best practices between the two countries in areas such as leadership, sustainability and the economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">President Tharman Shanmugaratnam said the agreement is a starting point to strengthen the countries\u2019 partnership in areas of mutual priority. These include trade, education, governance, digitalisation and public health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a toast speech at a state banquet he hosted in President Noboa\u2019s honour at Goodwood Park Hotel, the President said the two countries may be separated by the vast Pacific Ocean, but distance does not determine the depth of a partnership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/ecuador-president-to-make-south-american-countrys-first-state-visit-to-singapore?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">Ecuadorian President\u2019s visit to Singapore<\/span><\/a> reflected the shared purpose to build on the bilateral friendship, and to find more ways for both countries to work together, said President Tharman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">There is also more that connects the two countries than meets the eye, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This includes both being maritime nations with a long history of looking outward, using the oceans for connectivity and to build partnerships around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAs maritime nations, we share a joint interest in upholding the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and freedom of navigation, and in preserving the broader rules-based international order,\u201d said President Tharman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The two countries also recognise the importance of openness to trade and investment, he said, adding that Singapore welcomes Ecuador\u2019s application to become an associate state of the Pacific Alliance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Once Ecuador becomes a full Pacific Alliance member, it can then enter negotiations with the Republic to accede to the Pacific Alliance-Singapore Free Trade Agreement, which came into force for Singapore, Chile and Peru in May 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">President Noboa said Ecuador wants to deepen commercial and trade cooperation with Singapore, as well as in other areas such as scientific research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singaporeans could, for instance, live and work at the Charles Darwin research station in Galapagos, he noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He also said a banking licence has been offered to any institution chosen by the Singapore Government that would allow it to work directly with Ecuador\u2019s financial sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ecuador also wants to work with the city-state\u2019s universities, and have stronger exchange programmes with their students and faculties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSingapore has been an example of organisation, coordination, and also as a determined people to give a with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In a social media post, PM Wong said the visit &#8211; the first by an Ecuadorian president to Singapore &#8211; was an important milestone in bilateral relations, and reflects Ecuador\u2019s growing interest in engaging the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singapore and Ecuador established diplomatic relations over three decades ago, in 1994.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The two leaders had a good discussion on how to take relations forward, including in food security, trade, logistics and digitalisation, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI look forward to working with President Noboa to strengthen ties between our countries, and open up new opportunities for our peoples and businesses,\u201d said PM Wong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At the state banquet, President Tharman highlighted agriculture and food as <!-- -->another promising area for cooperation, given Ecuador\u2019s rich agricultural and marine endowment, including in bananas, cocoa, shrimp and tuna.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singapore companies already see the potential, he noted, highlighting examples of local firms that have ventured into the region such as DiMuto, a company that has worked with Ecuadorian partners to digitise and trace the supply chain for agricultural products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Another firm, PSA Marine, provides pilotage and boat services in the Ecuadorian ports of Guayaquil and Posorja.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThese are good examples of what our partnership can become, combining capabilities in ways that create value and open new markets,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">President Noboa said the South American nation sees the city-state as a strategic partner in Asia and wants to bring the two business communities closer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe\u2019re committed to building long-term partnerships with countries that share our vision of growth, innovation and sustainable development,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe also value Singapore\u2019s experience in areas that are essential to Ecuador\u2019s future: AI, digital transformation, the strategic use of data, and smart cities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">President Tharman said both countries are gateways to their respective regions, and that Ecuador can help Singapore firms access opportunities in the Andean region and the wider markets of Latin America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The two countries can also learn much from each other in preserving their natural and cultural heritage, he added, noting that Ecuador has five UNESCO world heritage sites, including the Galapagos islands and Quito city, its historic capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cUltimately, the foundations of any bilateral relationship are built not just through agreements, but through the people who give them meaning and momentum,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe should create more opportunities for our people \u2013 business people, public servants and youth \u2013 to meet and engage.
