More than 10 residents were evacuated after a fire broke out in Bukit Batok on Saturday (Aug 22) afternoon.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The fire broke out at about 1pm in a two-storey maisonette on the third floor at Block 628, Bukit Batok Central, reported Lianhe Zaobao.<\/p>\n
Videos of the aftermath shared by Lianhe Zaobao on TikTok shows the walls outside the unit blackened by smoke. The windows were also reportedly shattered and debris was scattered on the floor outside the unit.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The homeowner, identified as Anna, told the Chinese daily that she was having lunch nearby with her husband and two of their children when the fire broke out. Her other two daughters, aged 15 and 19, were home at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“I immediately rushed home after receiving a call from my daughter, but I’m not sure what caused the fire,” she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A neighbour in the adjacent unit, Lian Mengnan (transliterated), 72, said that the fire was suspected to have started from the electrical wiring next to the sofa, reported Lianhe Zaobao.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Lian recalled that he was picking up a package outside his house when his neighbour’s daughter ran out in a panic to ask for help.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He said that the fire had already spread to the sofa when he got closer and saw the flames and thick smoke billowing towards him. He quickly rushed into the unit and pulled the sofa away to prevent the fire from spreading further before getting out.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Senior Minister of State for Law and Transport Murali Pillai, who is also an MP for Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC, arrived at the scene at around 2.20pm and was spotted speaking to Anna and other residents, reported Lianhe Zaobao.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Speaking to the Chinese daily, Murali thanked the firefighters from Bukit Batok, Clementi and Alexandra fire stations for their quick arrival and for putting out the fire in about three minutes.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He revealed that the ground-floor area of the unit sustained extensive damage but firefighters were able to control the blaze and prevent it from spreading to the second floor.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He added that the town council, Residents’ Networks and the HDB will explore how to provide assistance to the affected families.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In response to AsiaOne’s queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at about 12.50pm that day.<\/p>\n
The fire involved the contents of a living room in a unit on the third floor and was extinguished with a water jet, the SCDF added.\u00a0<\/p>\n
No injured were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.<\/p>\n
