An elderly woman battling a rat infestation at her HDB block in Chinatown has turned to a homemade bait recipe, reportedly catching nearly 20 rats in just three weeks.<\/p>\n
The incident occurred at Block 32, New Market Road and has been ongoing for almost a year, reported Shin Min Daily News.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Xie (transliterated), a 76-year-old cleaner who lives on the fifth floor, told the Chinese newspaper that she has lived there for decades and despite there being a hawker centre downstairs, rats rarely come upstairs.\u00a0<\/p>\n
However, residents have reportedly spotted the rodents running around the corridors, biting on things and causing hygiene issues since the end of last year. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Xie, who leaves home very early each day, said she often sees rats scurrying around when she opens her door at around 4am or 5am. She added that her home security camera also captured footage of rats running along the top of her iron gate last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n
She bought sticky rat traps, using fried anchovies, duck bones and oyster sauce as bait, to lure the rats. She usually sets two or three traps at a time.\u00a0<\/p>\n
She added that after catching a rat, she usually waits for it to die before disposing of it.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Xie revealed that she has caught more than 10 rats over the last three weeks. Despite not setting out the traps every day, she said she still catches “quite a few”.<\/p>\n
“A few days ago, I set a trap at around 2am and when I got out of bed at 5am, two (rats) had already been caught,” said Xie.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Another neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, told Shin Min that a rat had crawled into his house but he managed to chase it away.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He added that the infestation only started recently and suspected it was related to people eating downstairs.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He also keeps his doors and windows tightly closed when he goes out to prevent the rodents from getting inside.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Second-floor businesses also frequently see rats and have placed barriers to prevent them from nesting in their shops, reported Shin Min.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Qiu (transliterated), owner of hardware store Tiam Kee Trading, said that he has seen rats running outside his shop and that they are quite large.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He has also been using boards to block gaps beneath the metal racks in his shop to prevent the rats from breeding inside the store.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Another business owner, He (transliterated), said that there used to be many rats in the restaurant area on the second floor but the situation improved after the restaurant closed years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“There are still rats. They usually only come out at night and are not very afraid of people. If someone approaches, they quickly run into the drain,” added He.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the Jalan Besar Town Council told Shin Min that the council conducts weekly pest control operations in the area and thanked residents for their feedback.<\/p>\n
The town council has also posted notices advising residents against gathering in the open area on the fourth floor.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The spokesperson said that the matter has been referred to the police to deal with potential illegal assemblies and gatherings and that the authorities will increase patrols in the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“We will continue to closely monitor the situation and work closely with relevant departments to improve the living environment for residents,” the spokesperson added.\u00a0<\/p>\n
