A group of more than 10 cyclists seen on video being chased by Traffic Police (TP) officers<\/a> in the wee hours of Aug 14 morning along West Coast Avenue is among 17 errant cyclists and one personal mobility device (PMD) user nabbed in a joint enforcement operation with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) that day.<\/p>\n

Police said in a news release on Sunday (Aug 23) that the operations were conducted in the vicinity of Jalan Anak Bukit and West Coast Highway, adding that a total of 26 offences were detected, with 18 individuals issued with composition fines.<\/p>\n

Among the offences detected, 13 individuals were issued with summonses for using a bicycle on a road during the hours of darkness without displaying the required white light at the front and\/or red light or red reflector at the rear.<\/p>\n

Ten individuals were also issued with summonses for riding a bicycle on a road without wearing a protective bicycle helmet.<\/p>\n

The agencies also confirmed that a fixed-gear bicycle, commonly referred to as a fixie, was seized.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In addition, an unregistered and non-compliant PMD was also seized.<\/p>\n

During the operations, officers also engaged cyclists and PMD users to raise awareness on PMD rules and guidelines.<\/p>\n

The police and LTA warned active mobility device users that they take a serious view of such offences that endanger public safety and contravene the law.<\/p>\n

“SPF and LTA will continue to conduct regular enforcement operations to ensure greater compliance. Cyclists and PMD users are strongly advised to comply with all regulations and practise safe riding habits,” the agencies said.<\/p>\n

Cycling rules<\/h2>\n

Singapore’s cycling rules and guidelines require cyclists to be in a single file on single-lane roads, as well as during bus lane operational hours, the switching on of front white lights and rear red lights in the dark, and wearing a helmet while cycling.<\/p>\n

In addition, the cycling group size limit is the length of five bicycles.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This means a maximum of five cyclists riding in a single file, or 10 cyclists riding two abreast on roads with more than one lane.<\/p>\n
