This isn\u2019t stealing, okay? Thank you, Buddha. I told Buddha about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The video does not show the woman actually eating the fruit. It is unclear if she removed it from the roadside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Stomp has reached out to the woman for comment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"lg:text-28 lg:leading-33.6px pt-md font-primary text-24 font-bold leading-1.2\">Netizens divided over woman\u2019s actions<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">In the comments section, some members of the public felt her actions were offensive, while others raised concerns about food safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">However, others felt there was nothing wrong with her actions, pointing out that the offerings might have been left unclaimed and it would be better for someone to eat them than let them go to waste.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">A folklore expert told Shin Min that roadside offerings during the Hungry Ghost Festival are traditionally believed to be meant for wandering spirits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">She said even picking up the <a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stomp.sg\/trending-now\/seventh-month-offerings-placed-front-jalan-besar-mps-national-day-banner-could-be-innocent-mistake?ref=inline-article-9553989\" target=\"_blank\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"noopener\">offerings<\/a> for a video without eating them could be considered disrespectful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">She also felt it was inappropriate to deliberately challenge tradition for social media views.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The expert urged greater respect even among non-believers, suggesting that the woman return to the site to \u201cmake amends\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">In September 2025, a 22-year-old TikToker similarly drew flak for<a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stomp.sg\/singapore-seen\/broke-and-hungry-tiktoker-says-he-did-not-really-eat-hungry-ghost-offerings?ref=inline-article-9553989\" target=\"_blank\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"noopener\"> pretending to eat Hungry Ghost Festival offerings,<\/a> later clarifying he did not intend to offend others with his actions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The National Environment Agency (NEA) has also <a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/17uBE2bJxN\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advised members of the public to keep shared spaces clean<\/a> while paying their respects, in an advisory posted on Facebook on Aug 12.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"bg-primary-100 h-px border-0 mt-lg md:mt-xxl\"\/>\n<div class=\"flex flex-col gap-xl rounded-xl border border-primary-100 mt-lg md:mt-xxl\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stomp.sg\/assets\/stomp-comment-COLiWNMD.png\" alt=\"Stomp Comment\" class=\"absolute -mt-lg -ml-xs w-[203px] md:w-[255px]\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Have something to say?
