One of the greatest films of the 1980s, Rob Reiner\u2019s Stand by Me<\/em> turns 40 this month. And, just as its hero discovers while looking back on the events of a summer long past, time and tragedy have only made it burn brighter.<\/p>\n

Based on a novella by Stephen King and sensitively adapted by Raynold Gideon and Bruce A. Evans, Stand by Me<\/em> is a film about, rather than for, kids. As with much of King\u2019s work, the main theme is the harm that adults do to children, and the scars it leaves.<\/p>\n

In the years since the film\u2019s release, its cast and crew have come to all kinds of harm themselves.<\/p>\n

Lead River Phoenix died aged 23 of a drug overdose in 1993. Co-star Corey Feldman, a sexual abuse survivor, has struggled with addiction throughout his career. And in 2025, Reiner was stabbed to death alongside his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, in their Los Angeles home. Their son, Nick Reiner, remains the chief suspect.<\/p>\n

After hearing that his childhood friend, Chris Chambers (Phoenix), has been killed trying to stop a knife fight, writer Gordie (Richard Dreyfuss) reminisces about the summer of 1959, when they were bored 12-year-olds scratching around their hometown of Castle Rock, Oregon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
