Add on the fact that rumours have been swirling that this might be Samsung’s last clamshell foldable, and it’s easy to see why things might start to look a bit grim.

Regardless, the Z Flip8 received some quiet improvements that make the phone not only even more portable, but also more convenient to use.

This year, the phone gets even lighter at just 180g, while the new bevelled edges make it easier to open one-handed.

Aside from that, the phone remains equipped with an Exynos processor here in Singapore, specifically the latest Exynos 2600, which also powers the Galaxy S26 and S26+.

There are also some small changes inside, with Samsung finally making use of silicon-carbon batteries for the 2026 Z series devices. Instead of opting for a larger battery, it remains at 4,300mAh since Samsung chose to slim down the device instead.

The FlexWindow also gets some nice improvements, with up to 16 native apps supported on it so users can handle small tasks without having to flip open their phones. Additionally, thanks to MultiStar integration, it’s incredibly easy to add additional apps below, with up to 50 slots available.

However, there are some small downsides to the phone as well. Let’s dive into it and see if the 8th generation of this clamshell foldable is worth the S$1,678 that Samsung is asking for it, and if we think Samsung is going to be discontinuing this form factor.

Design

There’s very little that’s different visually. Instead of gunning for more capacity, Samsung has decided to use the space saved to slim down the phone.

On the surface, it might seem like an odd choice, but when you consider the fact that most people who buy a Flip are looking for the portability of the form factor, it makes a lot of sense. The small weight reduction and slightly thinner profile might not look like much on paper, but it adds up when you’re using the phone daily.

Despite that, Samsung has managed to improve battery performance slightly, with the Z Flip8 clocking a little more uptime than the Z Flip7 in our tests. Hopefully, as Samsung gets more confident in implementing silicon-carbon batteries, we’ll be able to see better performance in this area.

Sadly, the phone doesn’t charge any faster. Wired charging is limited to just 25W and wireless charging at 15W. It took about 106 minutes to get from 0-100%, with a 50% charge needing 36 minutes. That’s not great by 2026 standards.

Conclusion

There were rumours that the Z Flip8 might be Samsung’s last foldable in this compact form factor, and while people might be worried because there aren’t a lot of changes or improvements, we think it’s more indicative of the fact that this form factor is now a mature one with most upgrades being iterative rather than groundbreaking.

It’s hard to think of a necessary upgrade that could be considered groundbreaking.

Photo: HWZ

At this point, Samsung has made the FlexWindow useful and as big as it can get. The only real upgrades moving forward will likely be regarding battery, cameras, whether Samsung can get the crease to be even less obvious, and perhaps better durability in the form of improved water and dust resistance. Hopefully we’ll see Samsung making these upgrades in the future.

It’s a shame that Samsung wasn’t able to put Flex Titanium into the Z Flip8, as that would have made the phone a more attractive upgrade proposition for owners of older Flips.

If you’re holding on to an older Flip phone (Z Flip6 or older), it might be worth taking a look at the Z Flip8. But if you’re rocking the Z Flip7, there’s very little incentive for you to change to this new model.

There aren’t many clamshell foldable phones left on the market.

Photo: HWZ

There are very few competitors in the Singapore market for a clamshell foldable, with other brands like Xiaomi not even updating their Mix Flip series anymore after not bringing the Mix Flip 2 to Singapore. OPPO has also stopped releasing new Find N Flip phones after the Find N3 Flip. Lastly, not only is Huawei’s Pura X foldable more akin to the Z Fold8, it’s also not sold officially in Singapore.

Given its dominance with this form factor, it seems unlikely that this will be the last time we see a new Galaxy Z Flip phone. What’s more plausible, however, is that the Flip could become the entry-level offering in Samsung’s ever-growing range of foldable phones. From a business standpoint, we can certainly see how such a positioning might make sense, given the popularity of the new Fold8 and how many foldable phones Samsung now has in its Galaxy Z lineup.

At the S$1,600 price range, it would be remiss of us to not mention that there are many bar-type flagship phones that you could opt for. These phones cost less, often have better hardware, and offer greater durability – important considerations for these uncertain times. For example, the Xiaomi 17 is much cheaper at S$1,249 and runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, while offering much better photos and a larger battery. There’s also the Samsung Galaxy S26, although that is only slightly cheaper and runs on the same Exynos 2600 processor.

However, if you’re looking for the most compact phone available, there really aren’t many good options aside from the Z Flip8.

Pricing and availability

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 starts at $1,678, and comes in three colourways: Pink, Cream and Graphite. There’s a Samsung Online Store exclusive colour, Mint.

The phone is available at Samsung’s Online Store, Lazada, Shopee, TikTok Shop, telcos (Singtel, M1, StarHub) and other consumer electronics stores like Best Denki, Challenger, Courts, Gain City and Harvey Norman.

Article Jumplist 1.
