When Laura and Richard Choi arrived at their new 1,615 sq ft (150 square metre) duplex in Repulse Bay, they had little more than four suitcases of possessions \u2013 a reality of lives spent criss-crossing the globe on business. They had never felt particularly anchored to any of their previous flats, but this time they wanted Hong Kong to be home rather than just a base.<\/p>\n
Enter their long-time friends Radovan Macak and Him Liu, co-founders of Prague Design Hub (PRAGDH), which has studios in Hong Kong and the Czech Republic. Their brief was to make this four-bedroom, three-bathroom rental feel deeply personal, without making permanent changes to a single structural element. Any design intervention had to be reversible, leaving the original fabric of the flat intact \u2013 and the project had to be completed in three months.<\/p>\n
Confronted with a layout that their clients found angular and unyielding, Macak and Liu deployed furniture as an architectural tool. Organically shaped rugs, rounded lighting and seating, circular tables, and shelving units with subtly curved edges began to neutralise the existing geometry.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs the property is rented, all furniture had to be free-standing, but it meant we could customise everything to create a cohesive space,\u201d says Macak, who has been living in Hong Kong for four years. \u201cAnyone can buy nice furniture, but without a clear narrative, pieces might seem disjointed.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/div>The sizeable entrance was a particular challenge because of redundant space and a linear path that led directly to the single flight of stairs descending to the living area. The designers interrupted this trajectory with a seating nook, opposite which they built a shelving unit to frame the entrance of what would become a television den, originally an enclosed dining room near the kitchen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
