{"id":77752,"date":"2026-08-19T20:44:59","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T12:44:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=77752"},"modified":"2026-08-19T20:44:59","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T12:44:59","slug":"9-times-the-joy-singaporean-couple-shares-what-life-with-9-kids-is-like-lifestyle-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=77752","title":{"rendered":"9 times the joy: Singaporean couple shares what life with 9 kids is like, Lifestyle News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Having a big family was not something Lay Hui and Luke had planned, but the couple now has nine children.<\/p>\n<p>And despite the challenges, the joy of seeing their kids grow up is nine-fold, they said.<\/p>\n<p>Sharing their journey in a video posted to the Government Technology Agency of Singapore&#8217;s social media account on Monday (Aug 17), the pair said they simply &#8220;took it as it came&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Acknowledging that raising nine children is no easy feat, Lay Hui said that she and her husband try to use hand-me-downs for clothing and books in order to manage costs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will ask them to do their work on rough paper so I can reuse their assessment books,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F2379560832861199%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=267&amp;t=0\" width=\"267\" height=\"476\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Lay Hui, who is a homemaker, also shared that one rule the family has always upheld is eating meals together.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even before we had so many kids, he (Luke) insisted on buying a big round table with ten seats,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Luke said that being able to have such a big family is &#8220;a celebration and a success story&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The only reason we can have such a large family is her (Lay Hui&#8217;s) resilience,&#8221; the intervention radiologist added.<\/p>\n<p>He also shared that the kids might not always be the most quiet or disciplined with their studies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But we&#8217;re also not perfect, right? So we just focus on the positive things,&#8221; Luke said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It has its challenges, but the joy is just seeing them grow up, and the joy is times nine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The couple also uses the LifeSG application for administrative matters such as registering the births of their younger children.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;rct=j&amp;opi=89978449&amp;url=https:\/\/www.asiaone.com\/singapore\/eligible-families-receive-1000-lifesg-credits-april-28-msf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LifeSG credits disbursed to families<\/a> also helped alleviate some of their expenses, they said.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Everywhere we go, people are watching&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Since such large families are not common here in Singapore, the father of nine said they often get curious looks when they go out together.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everywhere we go, people are watching us you know? Especially when we go to church, we will take up the entire pew,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Lay Hui shared that their children&#8217;s classmates are often shocked when they introduce themselves, but the couple has recently met a few more families with eight or nine children.<\/p>\n<p>With Singapore&#8217;s total fertility rate (TFR) dropping to a record low of 0.87 this year, stories such as Lay Hui and Luke&#8217;s are rare.<\/p>\n<p>In light of the declining birth rates, the Government launched an inter-ministry Marriage and Parenthood Reset Workgroup to help Singaporeans.<\/p>\n<p>Chaired by Minister in the Prime Minister&#8217;s Office Indranee Rajah, the workgroup consists eight other political office holders from the health, education, manpower and other relevant ministries.<\/p>\n<p>It examines issues such as financial costs, work-life support, housing, healthcare, pre-school and education.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the upcoming National Day Rally on Aug 23, the work group will be introducing interim measures to help address some of these issues.<\/p>\n<p>[[nid:742741]]<\/p>\n<p>bhavya.rawat@asiaone.com<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<center><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asiaone.com\/lifestyle\/singaporean-couple-9-kids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read Full Article At Source <\/a><br \/>\n<center\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Having a big family was not something Lay Hui and Luke had planned, but the couple now has nine children.
