{"id":77699,"date":"2026-08-19T15:57:03","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T07:57:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=77699"},"modified":"2026-08-19T15:57:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T07:57:03","slug":"boh-geh-uncle-canteen-one-of-singapores-oldest-coffeeshops-to-close-after-57-years-lifestyle-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=77699","title":{"rendered":"Boh Geh Uncle Canteen, one of Singapore&#8217;s oldest coffeeshops, to close after 57 years, Lifestyle News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>One of Singapore&#8217;s oldest surviving coffeeshops will shutter for good at the end of September, bringing an almost six-decade run to a close.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Canteen 398, more fondly known as Boh Geh Uncle Canteen, announced the news in a notice placed at the establishment, which has since been shared on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the notice, its last day of operations will be on Sept 18 and the coffeeshop will be permanently closed from Sept 19 after 57 years running.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thank you for all your support all these years,&#8221; read the notice.<\/p>\n<p>While no reason for the closure was shared in the notice, the owners told an Instagram user that they plan to take a break and retire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Located at 398 Piccadilly, the establishment opened in 1969 and was once part of the nearby Seletar Camp, the French Embassy in Singapore shared in a post on May 7.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It originally served as a corporal&#8217;s mess for the British army during the colonial era.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The establishment has retained its rustic, old-school style the past few decades, with open-air seating and canteen-style tables and chairs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Three stalls operate at the canteen, offering drinks and dishes including economic rice, ayam penyet, mee hoon goreng, lontong and sambal goreng.
